I read the TIS and answered my questions thanks
It seems from the TIS that the cavity foam is only there to seal the channel at each end for the structural foam.

Awesome!
Another alternative when using the TMS kit would be to DIY the epoxy reinforcements on the bottom, and then take your car to a pro to weld up the inside of the trunk. I'm extremely mechanical and have no issue with the mechanics of things, but I've never welded in my life. Then no need to fuss over the foam and tools needed for that. |

Or you could buy the plates pull your subframe and have a mobile welder do the welding for you.
I don't care how strong your epoxy is. Something that can rip the metal frame sure as hell can shift those plates and probably make them useless Last edited by bimmer07; 11-20-2009 at 12:49 PM. |

Bump for great thread , so if you're doing both then i guess there would be no need to inject foam into hole #2 ?

Sorry to bump an old thread, but what is the difference b/t cavity foam and structural foam?

In the case on the subframe the cavity foam is just used to plug each end of the small chambers where the subframe mounts are welded in. So when you inject the structural foam it fills and expands in the area that requires strengthening.

Another bump...
Anyone in the US buy the cavity foam and structural foam? My normal parts places can't get it. Tischer said they aren't able to get it, either. They said BMW doesn't want to sell it unless you're having the work done.

You can find much more info here:
http://www.m3forum.net/m3forum/showthread.php?t=287849 http://www.m3forum.net/m3forum/showthread.php?t=251279 http://www.m3forum.net/m3forum/showthread.php?t=152000 The possible replacements for those foams are also discussed in these topics. BTW, try to ask Mike from www.thebmwpartstore.com, maybe he can get it for you. Also may try www.bmwmercedesparts.com. Let me know what you find, as I am planning to do this as well. BTW, www.thebmwpartstore.com has the structural foam, p/n 83-19-0-445-721 listed for $152, and www.bmwmercedesparts.com for $129. Contact both and ask if it is true or not (since it still might be not available).
Added: http://ebmwparts.com has it for $127. Last edited by Nervous; 03-21-2012 at 11:20 PM. |

Just to let you know that Audi sell the 2 part epoxy foam for about half the price of the BMW dealers (in the UK anyway!)
Audi use the same stuff for the RS4 battery tray in the spare wheel well which is known for cracking. BMW quoted me £170 for the stuff but Audi is £95 So essentially you can repair both sides for half price. The part number of the Audi branded stuff is D 506 110 A3 |

Thread bump for good info
![]() So if I'm not mistaken, the TMS plates are placed between the subframe and the differential carrier to distribute the load, yeah? The diff MUST be taken out to have the kit installed?
