SMG wheel up and running! YAY! Pics included

Ok finally got the SMG wheel I got from Sam hookedup to the steptronic. It was an easy job. As there are many very good DIYs in the US section, as such I wouldn't try to do one again. However it was a very easy mod.

I am so impressed with this simple mod. It makes the car feel so much nicer than stock. The thickness of the wheel in it self is worth every penny! But the paddle shifts hooked to the steptronic just blows my mind away when driving even though its a 318i. I hate melbourne's straight roads now. I'm off to the Dandenongs for a drive tomorrow just to play with the paddle shifts. I recommened this fully to all those who have a steptronic.

These are some of my other mods;

Alpina inspired OEM BMW Wheel Style 89 17x8J running on Brigestone Potenzas

DICE ipod integration

mods in the wish list planned:
- Speaker upgrade (Want JBLs)
- Angel eyes
- BC indicator stalk (need someone with a GT1 to help with coding)
- Black out front grill. (Maybe vinyl wrap ? where can I get some?)

a few more random pics

Nice mods man. Wheel thickness definately improves the feel, good value for money mod.

Be interested to see if your step plays up sometimes with the mod. When I did this on the 330i, sometimes it would lock me out of manual mode and just hold the Step mode and it wasn't for 10 minutes or more of driving it would clear itself. Typically happened when both paddles were pulled back.

Nice work mate!

What parts do you need specifically to do this mod?

Any links to the DIY?

Mind me asking, how much did it all cost?

Thanks, will be watching for any issues. I had a look as the research done by MITE46 (http://e46.mit.edu) and see that shouldn't happen if both paddles are pulled back at the same time. I had quick PM from him too and was all cool with this mod after so many years. But thanks for the info, I will watchout. Do you still have your 330i with this wheel on ? Any pics ?

cheers mate!
http://forum.e46fanatics.com/showthread.php?t=63211 is a comprehensive DIY. It's on an X5 but the pins and parts are exactly the same on the e46.

Parts needed;
- SMG steering wheel with the paddleshifts (I resued the round airbag) Sam sold this to me for A$250
- SMG Slip ring (http://forum.e46fanatics.com/showthread.php?t=705491)
Got a mate in UK to hunt it down from a wrecker. Cost me A$60 including postage.
- You need to run 2 wires from the Steering column to the shifter $0

Thats it really

Hope this helps.

Brings back memories. The only car I have sold and one of my best mates has it. I went with the ZHP wheel modified with paddles from Sam (member from Canada) as the ZCP/CSL/M3 wheel is a touch to thick for me.

wilawok,Ballistic325Thanks mate! IMHO all steptronic users should do this mod.

CortinaD, with regards to pulling both peddles at the same time, I just found that it puts it back to SD, then if I pull either one it shifts manual as usual. This I never thought it would do. So, if I've had enough paddleshifting in Manual mode I can just pull both paddles and have the car back in SD mode without taking my hands off the wheel. That's another added feature for me.

Sherweeeny, Thanks mate, it was my intention that the car stays as close to a stock with value added mods to it. I personally think BMW did a good job with the 318i which is the car I'm familiar with and there is hardly anything you can really do to improve it.

pulo sure, let me know if you need any help with any of the mods I have done.

Sam_Micropak_AU Thanks for a seamless deal. You're a star!

Hmm, so you need a completely new steering wheel with built-in paddle shifters [Hence called the SMG steering wheel]? If so, that means I can't go out and buy myself a pair of paddle shifters and just change the frame of the steering wheel?

Mate, that looks a million bucks! The approach you've taken to the styling is nice as well, the car looks different but still understated. Any more plans on the horizon?

you are right, the facelifts look nice, and if you purchase it in a half decent colour, then you have a quite a nice base. i have much more respect for people who do subtle mods and have an overall nice looking car than the people who go and purchase crummy individual items each time they receive a paycheque and then finish it off with replicas of wheels that have been done to death.

i would honestly like to see more pics of you car... maybe some rear shots etc? those rims are quite mint for 17's
