One sick motor

The S63, BMWs new twin turbo 4.4 liter V8 motor that is powering the new X5 and X6 M.
whats so special about it. how about the turbos being between the bank, instead of outside.

The S63B44 engine represents the latest innovation coming out of the Motorsport Division steel gates. The 4.4 liter V8 engine uses an an amazingly engineered and of course patented, exhaust manifold. The dual twin-scroll turbochargers are positioned together with the catalytic converters in the V section between the two rows of cylinders. According to BMW engineers, compared to a typical V engine configuration, the cylinder heads have been reversed with the exhaust going towards the inside of the V. The cylinder head uses the same aluminum alloy as BMWs diesels.

The two cylinders for each scroll are 180 degrees apart in firing order, yielding better performance and most important, very minimal turbo lag. The turbos also have two liquid-to-air intercoolers.

The engine produces 555 horsepower, five more ponies than the Cayenne Turbo S and also an impressive 500 lb-ft of torque at only 1,500 rpm.

Thats an incredible design!

I wonder how they deal with so much heat in the center of the motor, under what usually is covered by a plastic engine cover. I always thought turbos were mounted down on the sides of engines because there was decent airflow there...

ive also read that putting them on the sided, the plumping from the turbo has to be much longer to get to the intake manifold, and that by swapping them around this could be shorter. quicker warm up time for the cats, and less lag.

That motor is super sick in every aspect. But those cats are SOOOOO restrictive, just imagine how much power it'll make without them.
4.4 v8 twin turbo is capable of 1000 (safe) horses with the right tune. BTW turbos in between the cylinder banks is super (It'll make or brake the design) .... just reverse the cams ..... what a brilliant idea.......
Anyway the motor is sick, but dont forget it's not BMW's thing>> meaning they're just getting into the Turbocharged business, they still have a long way to go and this is a HUGE step up.

BMW has been doing turbos for years, with the diesels, and since the 70s, with the 2002 turbo from way back, i think they have a thorough understanding of how turboes work.

Its cooling things they suck at.

Awesome. Cats are required, but I was kind of hoping to see them not so far forward in the exhaust stream like they are in most of the BMWs. I guess I shouldn't have expected different, but it probably would have gotten me excited for the future of BMW engines.

theyve been moving them closer and closer for emission purposes. cold start up really hurts their pollution output ratings.
Not, when supersprint or whomever makes headers for this puppy, my god, the price is going to be just absolutely maddening, but should make for bigger than normal gains.

Of course they do it for emissions purposes, cats are more effective when hot and moving them closer serves an obvious purpose, but that doesn't mean I can't hope we will eventually get an emissions system more like those of the European market BMWs. My point was really: imagine what kind of numbers the engine could produce stock with cats not choking down the turbos and exhaust flow so much.

Its wishful thinking man, the restrictions are only getting tighter and thighter. Its one of the main reasons bmw went back to gasoline turbo engines after such a long time.
