phone options

My 1999 323i is "pre-wired for cellular phone" what exactly does this mean?
Is there any way I can use a phone with my bmws system? I would be willing to buy a phone used and just get service on it and keep it in the car. I dont really want to spend the 700-1100 on a bluetooth retrofit. any suggestions? What phone would of been hooked up in it prior to bluetooth technology in 99 or 00?

You'll probably get a better answer if you post this in the Electronics section.

I've merged your two threads and moved them to the correct forum. Please help this new member out!
