You need a good flashlight or shop light and you need to be able to twist yourself around to get over by the footwell, above the transmission hump. You need to pry/move the footwell airduct out of the way then you'll see the "module" that they refer to in this write-up.

If I recall the screws (T20 or T25) that hold this module/unit are the same screws that hold the final stage resistor... I could be wrong, since it's been a while.

Thanks a lot 325myAZ. As suggested got a good flash light and got over by the footwall, moved the air duck and now I see the FSR from that point onwards I followed the DIY instruction. Thanks Again

Thanks for the DIY. Moving the duct was my major concern, but as long as people understand that it flexes out of the way temporarily for you to unfasten a screw, then goes back into place once you let go. You need to hold it out of the way to work underneath there. Also, you don't need to pull on the module. Just sort of push it over to the left so you can pull the FSR out the full way. The clip also needs a bit more force than it first appears, but I just used a small flathead screwdriver to wedge in there, and the FSR popped up far enough that it was unclipped. That took about an hour or so, but only because I was quite puzzled about how much pressure I could put on the duct.

Oh yeah, no screws in my FSR, just the clip. PEACE.

I did this yesterday.........and it solved the problem. The hardest part is reattaching the glovebox.....it is tight and dark, so the added light is a must...

It took about and hour and 15 minutes.....

great write up....

Will a failing FSR trigger the CEL?

Absolutely fantastic DIY! Great Pix! Thank you for making this as easy as is possible.

Getting into the area is a tight fit for anyone and getting your hands where they need to go while seeing what you need to see is tough. As others have mentioned make sure you have good lighting. It won't make it easy, but it will make it easier. You will curse.

When I got the FSR out it did not look like the new one I had just bought. The picture in this thread of the new one is CORRECT. My old one had longer and fatter cone shaped probes. I called BMW to make sure the new one would work in my car (2000 323ia).

Damn it's good to have my AC back as the temps hit the 90's here in South Florida!! And to save money to boot!

Thanks again,

Tom

I believe you, but I should add that my CEL light illuminated last night in conjunction with the first time I had ever noticed my failing FSR.

i have a similar problem

When i start my car, my cabin will start blowing air like, puff puff puff. Like the fan turns, then slow down, then turn again..& repeat. Is that the FSR?

Yuppers... that's what mine did. Sometimes the fan wouldn't go, then it would slowly ramp up to full blast... then stop. Then it sounded like it was pulsing; going from very slow to mid-speed, back to slow, up to mid, back to slow... Very erratic. Replaced FSR and it's been fine ever since.

QUALITY TUT / DIY, it took me 30 mins from start to finish. Mine had got that bad, the fan blew without the ignition on and flattened my battery. My FSR was just clipped in (no screws) 2000 318i SE.

hi all i'm new here but i read the forum with interest ! now i decided to write about my problem ....

i replaced the FSR , because my fan was working even when i switch off my car . i read about that FSR thing and replaced it with original one. then all was working like it was brand new . here comes the thing ..... yesterday i started my car and switched on my fan , without AC and in didn't work at all . i put it to max fan speed and nothing , swithed on my ac - nothing ....i had to go to the center of the town and as i was driving with the fan speed set ot maximum it suddenly started blowing , everything was working fine again .... this morning i went again to the car and everything was fine , but everytime before i switch off my car i turn off the acc and in few minutes i turn off the fan and then i turn the car off .

any suggestions what might be the problem .... ?

sorry for my english , hope yoy can understand what i have written

wish you health and happiness !

want to thank the OP on the write-up as well. everything went according to plan.
fan was always on high speed and lately been running after ignition shut off.
figured that I need to replace the FSR before it drains the battery or something.
got the part from Pelican as well along with other stuff just to get free shipping.
getting the 2 torx head screws out was time consuming. also had a bit of problem with the tab that holds the FSR but all went well.
using a magnetic T20 bit was helpful on the top screw.
