Question Questions on Headers???

So I keep hearing from people that they have headers on their car, and that if you have an aftermarket exhaust system on your car it will yield some nice performance results. What exactly are headers, and are they illegal, as I do remember my mechanic telling me that they are illegal. I would like to also know what the best kind are for my 2001 330ci. Thanks I appreciate the help soo much !!!

Headers are a replacement for your exhaust manifold. They essentially allow you to clear the cylinders more quickly after combustion.

Supersprint, or if you can source some Techniks, that's really the way to go, IMHO. There were a lot of people swearing by the ebay headers, but owners have been popping up more and more with leaks.

Here's a pic of my Techniks. They are equal length, and ceramic coated.

The headers arn't necessarily illigal but you, like me, live in California and there Nazis about the smog/emission laws. So i think what your mechanic ment was that your not suposed to put after market headers on because you will not pass smog. And yes even if you have cats installed you still won't pass.

I'd stay away from the ebay headers.

Removing the factory exhaust manifold also removes the factory catalytic converters. If emissions matter to you, you will need to weld in free flowing cats.

seeing that you are in california and you need to smog every 2 years, I wouldnt get headers. I have headers myself and they give a nice sound, but I always end up bending over to get my smogs done.
