Yeah, try moving the mirror selector switch to the other position!

I forgot which side it is, but essentially that same switch works as an on/off switch for the tilt function.

Haha, I had that issue, too. I didn't notice I moved the switch, and all of a sudden my mirror wouldn't tilt any more!

Yeah, it won't tilt if the switch is set to the passenger mirror.

yeah it's just another german logic thing. why would you want the mirror to tilt automatically if you had the switch set for manual adjustment with the joystick. and it could interfere with the execution of the auto tilt if you're in there moving it at the same time. it's not the engineer's problem that you didn't realize you left it there (essentially calling you a moron through uber-design).

kinda like the one click auto down (and up?) on the driver's window doesn't work if the door is open. that's probably more a safety thing as someone is more likely to have their hand somwhere in the window track with the door open.

i have been looking all over for an answer to this. My mirror does the same thing, sometimes after going into reverse my mirror starts to tilt down as it should, but freqently just STOPS half way or less into the process. getting out of R and back in, or flicking the switch from driver to pass. and back, moves it a little bit more.

My moon roof also sometimes stops moving on its own like this. I'm thinking its a safety thing .. if the motor is pulling too much current the system thinks something might be in the way so it stops the motor as a safety. unfortunately just b/c our cars are getting old the motor has to work harder...

i was able to fix the moon roof problem by greasing the tracks , but the mirror must be disassembled to clean and lubricate the parts of it. I have not yet tackled that .. if anyone else has similar experience or solution, please post

I too have been having this problem, I remember somewhere someone saying it had to do with the firmware that the mirror operated on but when I talked with the BMW stealership they told me that they never heard of this. I will subscribe to this post in case you guys come up with anything. easyIsle I will be looking out for your findings after your disassembly.

well I did not have to disassemble, thankfully.

All I did was move the mirror all the way UP to it's extreme, then all the way right until it stops, all the way down until it stops, all the way left until it stops, then all the way back up until it stops (moving the mirror to each corner extreme).

This seemed to free up the motor and for the past 2 months it has tilted down (in reverse) and back up fine without my intervention.

Hope this helps
