Transmission jams when going into reverse

Hi all, every once in a while my '02 330 (auto trans) jams up when going into reverse from a cold start. It happens both when on a hill and flat surfaces. I will start the car, take off the e-brake, put her in reverse and then the trans doesn't seem to want to function- the torque of the engine then puts pressure on everything and I have to throw it in neutral real quick. Once I forward up a bit this seems to 'dislodge' whatever is going on in there and then I can reverse as normal. I have no fluids whatsoever leaking from the engine/trans/diff.

Any ideas as to what's going on here? Cost to repair? Potential consequences? Thanks for the help! And yes, I did do a search but most everything that turned up was people saying their reverse gear wasn't working at all.
