BMW builds M5 CSL

Celebrating 25 years of M5, BMW reveals today at Nurburgring an one-off BMW M5 CSL. Our german editor Benny is on-site and will report more news in the next few hours.

BMW's Motorsport division buils a special lightweight version of the current E60 M5. The car is being described by M division's head of development, Albert Biermann, as "the M5 CSL we never built".

The almighty 5.0 liter V10 engine has been modified taking its capacity up to 5.5 liters. To accomplish this task, the highly strung, 90-degree unit has been enlarged with a longer stroke

Official horsepower and torque numbers have yet to be disclosed, but Herr Biermann hints at around 580 horsepower and near 400 lb-ft of torque, a significant increase over the standard M5.

A carbon finer manifold increases capacity of the air box and a secondary oil cooler. The front bumper gets an additional air duct in the place where the license plate is usually situated.

Channelling the added reserves back to the rear wheels is a beefed up version of the M3's seven-speed double clutch gearbox. The Getrag engineered unit, operated via steering wheel mounted paddles or push/pull gear lever, supplants the standard M5's sequential seven speed manual unit, offering smoother and more rapid gear shifts.

Since CSL is all about decreasing the overall weight, the BMW M5 CSL receives a carbon fiber roof, reducing the weight by 50 kg.

The interior has been stripped down, rear seats have been removed while two carbon fiber seats replace the front ones.

No official performance numbers have been released yet, but Herr Biermann hints the M5 CSL did the Nurburgring track in under 8 minutes, 20 seconds faster than the regular M5.

Unfortunately for the BMW fans, the M5 CSL remains an exercise and there are no plans for a production car. '

In terms of its suspension the new M5 remains close to the standard specification. "We've altered the mapping of the variable dampers but the geometry remains the same," says Biermann.

No performance claims have been made for the powered-up-and-pared-down M5, but Biermann says it is "comfortably faster the standard M5's 4.1sec 0-100km/h".

He also confirmed to Autocar that the new one-off M5 it has already lapped the Nurburgring in the hands of long-time BMW race driver, Claudia Huertgen, in under eight minutes, making it some 20sec faster around the legendary German circuit than the standard M5.

"It's a lot gutsier than the standard M5," says Huertgen, who this year drove the new Alpina M6 GT3 race car in the FIA sportscar championship. "You can sense the added drive out of corners. There's more bottom end shove. I'm pulling over 180mph under the bridge at the Doettinger Hohe [teh fastest point of the track]."

Yet despite the investment that has gone into creating the new uber-M5, Biermann says it is destined to remain a one-off.

"Right now we're concentrating on the next-generation M5. This car has been fun to develop but there are no plans for production," he says.

What I wanna know is why is the M5 CSL flamboyantly painted whereas the M3 CSL is a nice solid grey color. Also, why is the front license plate NOT in the license plate holder? If you're going to mount the plate to the side, at least remove the stock holder

If the CSL abbreviation means coupe-sport-lightweight, then it makes no sense to use it for an M5 sedan.
Its still badass though.

Everything sounds perfect except for "Channelling the added reserves back to the rear wheels is a beefed up version of the M3's seven-speed double clutch gearbox."..

Looking forward to owning a 6speed AW E60 M one day.

My facepalm was for the ones nitpicking the name. Who the fuk cares, they're only making one and there is no rule that says they can't come out with a different name once its complete.

Only one, you can't buy, prolly won't ever see it, who cars what its called, its fukin bad ass. I say we call it BMF M5, how's that?

Okay, here's a potentially stupid question, but, what's the fukin' point of a car with 4 doors and no back seats? They should have done a M6 CSL if they were gonna do a rear seat delete. For the sake of the exercise, they should have at least removed the standard rear seats and replaced them with lightweight CF buckets or something.
