Like someone else said, get them while they're in med school and they don't know better since they're only a step up from undergrad. I got lucky and married one who is now in her last year of med school. I guess she was ok with me aspiring to be a fake doctor (dentist).

Actually, from my experience the opposite is the case. My brother, sister in law, and girlfriend are all physicians. My brother did his fellowship and residency in NYC. Internal medicine docs at his hospital started at 120k. Were talking lower manhattan. He took a job as an infectious disease doc in NorCal starting at 180k. He was also considering a job in Dallas starting at 250k. My gf is a pediatrician in the bay area. Started at 140k.

My point being is that it's a supply and demand issue. Highly educated people often want to live in a culturally diverse area like CA or NYC or are often raised in these areas and don't want to leave family, friends, etc. Thus the competition drives down salaries. This is purely speculation on my part. I can't see why else pay wouldn't be much greater in a high COL.

I might add that these are all major corporations that they work for and not private practice.

Interesting. That does make sense. I have seen some fam docs around the rural areas in Alabama making as low as 80k. Double whammy-crap area and low pay.

you have to figure cost of living into that equation. teachers, engineers, plumbers, etc will always make more in cali or ny as opposed to rural alabama.

That's true but 80k is still low for an education costing 150k+.
