2006 bmw x3 3.0i advice

Looking to pick up a 2006 bmw x3 3.0i cause wifey needs a car to drive and we both need a larger vehicle as the 330ci is too small for most anything.

Car has 89k miles. Records for the last 45k miles. 2 owners. I'll be third. Small dents on both passenger doors and dent on drivers fender. Scuffed bumpers probably from street parking but no cracks or dents. Automatic cause the 330 is stick and wifey can't drive manual.

It has the m54b30 which at this point I am very familiar with but I was told the x3s have problems with transfer case and differential.

Anyone has any experience with these cars. I am very much a DIY so maintenance is ok I just can't do major work that requires lifts or stuff like that.

I talked the guy down to 7k.

Any thoughts. Stuff to watch out. Experience. Good or bad?

Looks to have the sport package cause of the painted bumpers.

Edit: steering wheel is not sports wheel but the painted bumpers were an m sport option.

Those X3s are pretty damn awful.

The 90's called they want their steering wheel back.

Why why why why? Take the 7K, and lease yourself a CRV.

Yeah. I have been reading all day and it seems the issue is come and go. The owner said he addressed the transfer case but he said something about a switch so I don't think he knows. I just want a sporty suv that won't be a nightmare. But I also don't want to spend more than like 10k at most. Don't believe in buying new cars

Buy a crv. It'll run forever with minimal maintenance and all of which you can do yourself. A sporty cheap SUV will be a money pit.

If your budget is $10k max, you probably shouldn't be looking at a BMW.

What about a Ford Escape? My buddy has 2. They seem like decent rigs. He just traded in one for a 2015 Explorer, which is pretty sweet.

i know hondas and toyotas are awesome but 1. i hate how crvs look (ugly as hell) and the 4runner is a bit big since my wife will also drive it.

there is nothing financially absurd about a bmw. i have had a 330ci for over 2 years now and i have never felt like i am burning money. its a fun car and i love it and yeah its required some things here and there but nothing crazy. 80% of my expenses have been on exterior style mods. all maintenance is done.

i dont believe in buying brand new cars why i always go for 10 yrs used around. i am mechanically inclided.

BEFORE I GET A CRV I WILL RATHER GET AN OLDER JEEP CHEROKEE from early 2000s. i actually like the way they look when properly cared for.

i want something that is affordable but i dont want to hate driving the car....i am a car guy....there is nothing worse than driving a car that gives you no feelings at all. i have driven my friends 2013 crv many times and i hate how slow acceleration is and how sloppy the steering is. i would much rather have a used bmw than that **** no matter how reliable it may be.

i think escapes are ok. i used to work for Enterprise back int he days so i have driven them many times. the late 2000 models. i love their power steering. its so soft. but the thing is once you drive a bmw, that steering response is hard to give up.

they did get engine lights often though. not major issues but annoying little things.

my beater options
are a 2000 jeep cherokee ( no experience with them but i hear they are bulletproof)
late 90s Toyota Rav4
early to mid 90s Toyota 4runner (open HeadGasket recall on them so that would be nice)
mid to late 90s CRV (the only crvs i actually like)

i guess this would be the smart thing to do as my wife also is very inexperienced driver so i would want her to drive for a year at least before moving to a nicer car. now that i think about it. there is a high probability of a crash in her beginning stages and id much rather her crash a 3k car than a 10k car.
