Rear View Mirror AEM Gauge Upgrade DIY for HPF M3's

The HPF AEM Rear View Mirror Gauge Upgrade is now available for all F/I M3's. The plug and play RVM setup is in stock and may be ordered directly from HPF for new gauge installations and M3 owners that currently have AEM Wideband and Boost Gauges installed may upgrade while your car is in HPF's shop in Portland or have the option to ship thier parts directly to me if you wish to DIY.

I am currently working on upgrades for Evil Twin Rob and a few other F/I M3 owners and this thread will provide existing HPF M3 owners detailed instructions for removing and re-installing the components required for the RVM Upgrade.

Disassembly Instructions

First remove the black plastic shell that encloses the mirror bracket. The cover has several plastic clips that snap together. Push down on the right hand side of the cover near the seam and gently pry apart with the screwdriver.

Once the cover has been removed, dismount the rear view mirror from the windshield by turning the mirror counterclockwise approx 45 degrees and it will come right off.

Disconnect power connection

Remove the 5 screws/clips from the cover below the dash and pull the cover off

Remove the connections and set the cover aside

Using a small screwdriver push upward on the two plastic rivets on the bottom of the steering column

Pull down gently on the lower portion of the steering column and set aside

Remove the AEM Gauges from the pods by gently pulling the gauges out and disconnecting the wiring connections from the rear of the gauges. The boost gauge (on the right) has a knock siren on the back of the gauge. Remove the nut securing the siren and leave the siren inside the pod.

Remove the screw on the top of the steering column

Detach the leather from the rear of the steering column by pinching the 4 clips together

Disconnect the the wiring connection labeled "GAUGE ASSY". Remove the upper steering column with remaining wires and components intact and set aside.

This completes the disassembly process. You will need to ship your mirror, both gauges and the upper steering column cover with the key switch, race fuel LED, knock siren and wiring attached.

NOTE - Installing the gauges inside the E46 M3 rear view mirror requires the rectangular SOS M3 mirror. If your car is currently equipped with the oval mirror we will accept the oval mirror as a core exchange and provide an oem SOS mirror for your installation.

Assembly

Assembly Instructions

The LED displays from each gauge will be installed inside your mirror, the remaining portion of the gauge components will be placed inside the dash and connect to the existing wiring connections. We will install the race fuel key switch, LED and knock siren on a new oem steering column as shown.

Remove the thin portion of the driver's side A-pillar

Remove the 3 torx screws and the A-pillar cover

Remove the sun visor and visor clip as shown to allow the ribbon cables to be inserted inside the headliner

Remove the map light

Beginning under the dash, route the two ribbon cables as shown. The path for the cables zig zags a bit and I found it helpful to feed a couple of feet of safety wire through, attach it to the cables and pull them through.

Route the cables along the A-pillar and just inside the headliner as shown.

Re-install the rear view mirror on the windshield, route the cables through the headliner and connect the oem wiring connection and two ribbon cables as illustrated.

Plug the existing wiring connections for the AEM Gauges into the back of the pods and secure all loose wires and pods inside the dash as shown.

Install the steering column cover and re-connect the GAUGE ASSY

Install the lower portion of the steering column and secure the knock siren as illustrated.

Start the car and verify that the gauges are functioning properly.

The clamshell will need to modified as shown to allow room for the new wiring harness.

In case anyone's interested this is where my methanol switch is installed.

Re-install the sun visor, A-pillar cover, map light and lower cover and your HPF - AEM Gauge Rear View Mirror install is complete.

DIY for disabling the SES light available HERE

lol, I don't remember what I offered.. free mirror setup to the first person that beats my time? That was probably it.. ok still on but the time has to be verified by Divexxtreme. And if I beat my time first you have to beat the new time.

Rob, got a few oem steering column covers in today and installed your race fuel key, led and knock siren. Everything else is done, just waiting for a batch of the custom glass we use to replace the oem mirror and this should be on it's way back to you early next week.

Do you have any videos of it working?

Here's a vid I posted a few months ago. Using the oval isn't recommended as there's just not enough mirror there to make it look good, imo. I'll be happy to put them in the oval mirror if that's what you want.

The mirror upgrade is $499 for the full plug and play setup (gauges are sold separately), including a new oem steering column cover (for current HPF owners) and transferring all of the components - race fuel key, led and knock siren. If you have the oval mirror and want to upgrade to the SOS mirror (recommended) we can accept your oval mirror as a core exchange. The mirrors are also available for s/c cars.
