@ brut - your plate = god status :rolf:

i must say i agree with mr. shelby about winning races however athletes foot has no place in this thread.

this thread is truly amazing. as far as that piece about 20% of americans dont believe in god, thats amazing. however down here in Texas i find it hard to believe.

Religion & Churches are really nothing more than social clubs:

very much like This forum:

*we all have something in common (BMW / E46) and we share our ideas, experiences and knowledge with one another.

*there is a self appointed leader of the people...(Jon Jon)

*occasionally we have meets and get together to bullsh*t and eat...etc...

*there are membership status levels based on financial contribution.
(registered member, OEM (purple) , Modded...etc)

*if you get out of line you can be banned (excommunicated).

*we put stickers on our cars to show our loyalty to the religion...ooops, I mean club/ forum.

*and lastly we pretty much think that all the other members of other forums can go to Hell.....

*am I missing anything?
.
.

.OH Yeah....How could I forget???!!!

.KPENG is GOD!!!!....

The brainwashing of children and the mantra that blind faith is good. The opposition to knowledge that threatens their existing views. (Ok, that one may apply here as well.)

Religion is an insult to human dignity. With or without it you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion. Steven Weinberg

Great quote! I really like that one...

I often think about how most of what we do is "human nature" and that perhaps religion is not directly responsible for it. But time and time again I look at history, and see how religion is the catalyst for violence, the brutal repression of woman and child, and most importantly, for ignorance.

Some points that are good for discussion/ arguing religion...

1) All religions look forward to the end of the world. How crazy is that?!?

2) Where in the bible is there a single passage in praise of intelligence?

3) Religion makes us comfortable with NOT understanding the world.

Some more fuel to the fire...

"Life in Lubbock, Texas taught me two things. One is that God loves you and you're going to burn in hell. The other is that sex is the most awful, dirty thing on the face of the earth and you should save it for someone you love."
-Butch Hancock, American folk-country-rock signer

"Reason should be destroyed in all Christians."
-Martin Luther (1483-1546)

"Reason is the greatest enemy that faith has; it never comes to the aid of spiritual things, but more frequently than not struggles against the divine Word, treating with contempt all the emanates from God."
-Martin Luther (1483-1546)

"Whoever wants to be a Christian should tear the eyes out of his reason."
-Martin Luther (1483-1546)

"Parsons always seem to be specially horrified about things like sunbathing and naked bodies. They don't mind poverty and misery and cruelty to animals nearly as much."
-Susan Ertz

"After all, 'It's in the Bible.' That repeated assertion expresses the essence and fundamental paralysis of the literal mind."
-Walter A. Davis

"If the Bible had said that Jonah swallowed the whale, I would believe it."
-William Jennings Bryan

"If we have to give up either religion or education, we should give up education."
-William Jennings Bryan

"I had given up the church, more because of its complicity with slavery than from a full understanding of the foolishness of its creeds."
-Lucy Colman

i LOOOOVE this thread. i moved to the bible belt a few years ago and cant' stand all of the bigotry i've found here because of it! more people hate each other down here in the name of god. and i can't tell you how many lectures i've received for not believing in god.

anyway:

"i'd rather laugh with the sinners than cry with the saints"
billy joel

"god and god's laws lay hid in night. god said let newton be, and all was light"
alexander pope

and to all of the people who try to tell me i'm sinning or why not believing in god is wrong, i just tell them "the devil was a fallen angel"

Yep! And if you want to get really serious and bring out the big guns, I'd read some of these:

"God is Not Great" - Christopher Hitchens
"Why I am Not a Christian" -Bertrand Russell
"The God Delusion" - Richard Dawkins
"The End of Faith" -Sam Harris

These are just a few of the more popular ones. Dawkins is the most scientific, Hitchens the most...aggressive. Either way, they are all filled with excellent arguments.
