04 325i died on the highway

Driving along at 70mph and it started missing and as I pulled off to the exit it died. It will crank and briefly start but dies again. Even if I give it gas the revs will not go above 1k.

I had it towed to the dealer that has done good work or me before but I don't want to be blind on this.

I tried a quick search but i'm at work so don't flame me, too much anyway.

Funny you mention gas as the light was on but it said I still had 45 miles to go.

why does that sound like limp mode? limp mode allows the engine to run...

OP, I've heard that a weak fuel pump will conk out with around 1/4 tank of gas left. Is that what you're at? Most sudden deaths seems to just be the pump. Luckily it's not that expensive and takes a half hour to DIY. Do you hear it prime the engine when you put the key in position 2 (don't crank it). It should "hiss" below you. That's the fuel going through the fuel filter.

^ This x2, but more like 1/6. Gas is required for proper fuel pump lubrication. Personally never leave mine below 1/4

As I wrote I had it towed to the stealership. If I were home I would play with it as i always work on my cars but this caught me out of the blue. I had my daughter in the car and just need to get somewhere safe.

More than likely it was out of gas. Honestly I had the same problem in my old 325i it said I had 42 miles left started going up a hill and it died. Filled it up with gas and haven't had a problem since.

Really? You were with your daughter. In Baltimore. And you do not have the sense to keep your fuel at a safe level? Parenting fail. I hope the dealer robs you blind as a lesson.

Light comes on at 50 miles which means you can drive what at least 60 miles. I was driving 12 miles to her school and was going to get gas on the way.

You can criticize me as a car owner but not as a parent. Do not cross that line.

I agree how is parenting related to gas levels? Lol

Mike: its common sense. You just do not do that in that hell hole of a criminal town like Baltimore. Especially when you're with your loved ones. I hope you carry a concealed weapon.

You could have avoided this, by avoiding this. Your range estimate is just that, an estimate. Always avoid letting the fuel light come on in any car, just fill up when you get to a quarter tank. Lucky for you fuel pumps on BMW's are very easy to replace, if yours is in fact dead.

(Please pardon my auto-correct)

Dude what is you problem? Do you know Baltimore? Beside that who are you to judge?

I was in Timonium, hardly a hot bed of criminal activity. I was not driving through the hood looking for a dime bag.

Yes I know Baltimore. I presumed you were in the city from your profile.

Really? You're questioning his parenting? You must be the kind of person who complains to the HOA about their neighbor's car being parked outside. Shut up right now about his parenting.

Everybody telling the OP he is dumb for letting his fuel light come on also need to shut up. It does not hurt the car at all to have a low tank. As long as the fuel pump doesn't go dry, you can go low. Use some reasoning for god's sake. Stop being so freaking condescending. The only other person in theis thread who even knows what they are talking about is choxor anyway. All you other people can continue to argue whether or not low fuel hurts the car (hint, it does not).

The estimate will not be off by 50 miles. The fuel level senders are quite accurate in our car. If the car went empty, then it would have said 0 when it ran out. The car knows it has fuel left. It is definitely the pump.

tl;dr: stop judging people. OP change fuel pump.

+1 on this. If the dealer confirms this, I would have it towed to your house...you can get a pump online for around 120 or so, but dealer charges 300-400 dollars just for the part
