What size wheels? I have a 2004 325xi with sport (17" OEM rims) - these fill the "gap" - not perfect, but does look much better than 16"

A drop gives decent performance gains as well as a much better look for the xi. Pair the Eibach Prokit with Bilstein xi Sports
The Eibach website says:

As a driver you immediately feel more direct handling and greater predictability. Nose dive under braking is reduced, as well as excessive body roll in hard cornering. Tracking stability--and driver confidence--is greatly enhanced. Lowering your vehicle has one more additional benefit that we learned from all the race teams we work with and independent testing: reduced wind resistance. This allows for higher top speeds on the race track and better fuel efficiency on the street!

When i bought the car the owner replaced the OEM rims with crappy sport edition rims. I just measured them and they are 17's (I think). I measured them from beginning of tire to beginning of tire on the opposite side of the rim and got 17. I don't know if that's how you measure rims I just assumed. Yes, I know i'm retarded I just never really measured rims before.

while rims on a xi with no drop makes the car look like it has a ton of wheel well gap in photos.. in person its not as bad. dont listen to the slammers.. do what you like and what your budget can handle. Its nice to use the forum for advice on what could look good/bad but dont let it be your bible. I started with clears, black grill and then m3 trunk spoiler and roof spoiler. Then i got 18in csl's and looks good. Granted, a drop would make it look great. just havent gotten around to finding the right spring/shock combo.

Yup, just checked the tire and it says 16 so i guess i have 16 inch rims. I really wanted to drop it and then put on rims but my Dad said no and he has final say because he bought the car. I've been trying to convince him for the drop but he's not budging. Rims he said are fine and i've been leaning towards non staggered 18" csl so we'll see what happens.

The 2 biggest exterior mods you can do without paying to paint new bumpers or install new shocks are get a set of clear corner lamps and invest in some new rims.
Clear corners:
http://www.turnermotorsport.com/html...LE46SEDAN02-04
Be sure to order black trim to match your headlights and pay the extra money to get the stealth bulbs so you can't see the orange in the new lights.

I also have a 325xi, and I put 17" Beyern Type Mesh rims on with summer tires (225/45/R17) in the spring. It looks great, but sometimes I wish I paid a little more for the 18"s. I was a student at the time. I run snow tires on the stock rims for the winter.

The only other mod I have on my car is an aFe Cold Air Intake kit. I really do notice the extra response that I get out of my car.
Pics below:
The first one with the Beyern rims, the second after installing the clear corners. I also put the chrome grille on with the clear corners, but that's just my preference.

yeah, I'd like to do a lot of stuff to my car right now I just don't know what one to do first. I'm thinking 30% tint all around minus windshield, rims, and clears. I'm sending my car in at 80,000 miles for maintenance so after that I can start saving up for more mods.

I'll get som pics - i added clears, matt black grill, and a m steering wheel so far. The 17 stock sport package wheels look good. I agree -the car looks really solid in person. i am surpised how big of a difference the clears make -

best exterior mod for a 325xi is in my opinion: new suspension....
a drop would look so much hotter AND also handle way better

Problem is I don't have enough money to buy shocks and springs. The only thing i have enough money for is the h&r sport springs that are like 200 bucks. And I heard that if you buy lowering springs and not matching shocks, it will kill the shocks and youll have to buy new ones. Maybe it's a myth but ive heard that you have to buy both together.

Exterior wise, start with clears, angel eyes and a replacement bumper (M-Tech II or M3). You can then go on to wheels and suspension to clean up the outside.

Congrats on the car, you've come to the right place
Don't touch the bumper!!! Especially to go to MTech! If you want to change, I highly recommend looking @ the alternatives to the MTech..... It's such a COMMON mod!! Way too many e46 masquerading as M3's

My suggestions; sports suspension (drops about 1.5"), angel eyes, blackout grills, tint, golf-T mod (search).... not much $$$, will notice improvement in handling with new suspension.

I agree mtechii and m3 bumpers are way too common. Really annoying.

Careful about dropping the front suspension on an XI beyond the factory sport package height. Your going to run into wheel travel issues. I have the sport package and then got some hk lowering springs. It looked awesome but it kept bottoming out hard in the front. I removed my hk springs in favor of my stock sport springs.

If money is of concern, try looking for thinks that you can paint yourself. Most of the e46 can be blacked out by yourself.

I've got some pleasantly wide lightweight rims on my ride. About 1k for 4 rims and 4 tires. It really changed to whole look of my car for the better. Of course I did it cause my stock rims kept cracking and I was down to 3. You can't drive a bmw on 3 wheels.
