on a side note: a girl had her mitsubishi eclipse towed into my buddies shop. complaining the car wouldnt start. come to find out the engine seized. cause she bought it and drove around 46k without ever changing the oil. dropped pan and it was bone dry. she said she didnt know she had to change the oil. lol. repair cost 3800 for engine replacement from junkyard. my public service announcement if you dont know what your doing take it to a mechanic screw ups can be very costly. we see at least 1 diy screw up every week and it is usually 2-3x more costly to "fix the repair" than it would of been to just have it done in the first place.

It could be. You've most likely seen the Steptronic tranny failure threads on here by now. To prevent the tranny failure some people have had their fluid changed (flushes most likely, not a drain) and it can cause it to fail FASTER.
In your case you drained the tranny, drove on it, then who knows (refilled or flushed). So you've put your tranny under MORE stress than it was designed to take.

What tranny fluid did he refill it with? Do you even know what tranny you have and what fluid it takes?
I'm sure you had more than 1 quart of ATF in there when you drained it. Since you did a simple drain and didn't drop the pan, you probably lost 3-4 quarts. There's probably still more ATF in the torque converter and the filter to do too much damage. The Vavoline MaxLife Dex/Mercon ATF fluid covers most of the e46 trannies. You don't want to drain and refill it too quickly. Changing it frequently will shock the system and make things worst. |
