Unless you play lots of CDs or DVDs, I wouldn't even bother to try and exchange right now. The warranty is for a year, wait til the supply catches up with the demand so you know you won't be out of a HU for months while the next batch is "in production"

thats not terrible advice.....check with your vendor, if they have something to exchange, great, do it......but if they dont, have them set one aside from their next shipment to exchange and have them contact you then, that way you arent waiting forever for an exchange.

So today I had to run to the Rx up the street and i didnt take my ipod. As you know, i have a DVD stuck in the unit, so not CD, so i turned the radio on. I thought it would be no big deal because i tested the radio and it worked fine.....wrong. The radio seems to only work well when not in motion. As soon as i started driving, it became all staticie and i could barley hear the station. Ugh

I know some of you had talked about getting a different antenna adapter, i read that some were using one for a VW. Anyone know which model number works and where to buy? Does this help with reception?

01 and older have a different antenna that the later cars, it is powered by the head unit, you take out the stock headunit and your antenna no longer recieves power....I think I know which one it is but I want confirmation from someone who has an early E46 before I recommend anything. Contact dreamliner330....the OP on this thread, he figured out which adapter to use and report back....

This is what i am unsure of in the picture below.

So there is obviously the wiring harness, then there is the black antenna that plugs into the antenna adapter, but where does that gold wire plug into Dynavin. Theres no place for it.

Those both go to your antenna, you will only use one with the dynavin but you will need the correct adapter to power the oem antenna....and the correct adapter is what we are trying to get confirmation on....

I think it is a metra 40-VW53...... But i want someone with an aftermarket deck and a pre 2001 car to confirm this....

About the antenna adapters.

From the researched I've gather, you need both metra 40-VW53 and 40-EU20. Got both from ebay for around $10 each.

ok got mine installed... but while playing around with it, ive noticed that it keeps forgetting some settings. specifically for the NAV, it forgets the the file to select for the software, and it also forgets the settings (like when i turn off the touch beep). this seems to happen when i go to the NAV and it makes me calibrate the touch screen (without me choosing to). anyone else have this happen? also it seemed to have pretty much no hiss at first, and seemed to get worse after a little while. that was just fm radio though, i havent tried a cd yet

Ok, i get what your saying. Perhaps that is the reason that my radio fades in and out while in motion, the antenna is not getting the right power because i dont have the right adapter.

Yeah, thats the deal, the adapter will have a wire that you tap into the accessory power wire in the harness and it puts 12v to the center pin of the antenna powering it......ive searched extensively and the info out there is not clear. I know that a lot of guys have just switched to a later model antenna but im sure it can be done easier than that with the correct adapter.

what we need is somebody to chime in here and say "i installed an aftermarket deck in my 99-01 E46 and i used part number xyz and it worked perfect".....

The response i got was that it was 40VW10, but it doesnt look right, he wasnt positive. The 40VW53 looks right and says it fits the 99 BMW, so i am going to try it and report back.

Also, I see that the adapter that people are using has two wires coming out the back, one for the black antenna wire from the car and then another smaller wire. Does that smaller wire get tapped into the gold wire that currently plugs into nothing, or does it get tapped into a 12v source?

SO here's a bit different question. I will need to use the relocation kit for the HVAC to install the Dynavin. My car has the manual HVAC controls and not the climate control unit. Is there a different kit required?
