ZHP software not raising rev limiter?

Hey guys,

I'm going to try and keep this short. I recently had the Performance Cam kit installed on my 2002 330. Needed some lifters replaced (misfiring) so as long as I was in that deep I figured what the heck. The shop that did the work is a bimrs.org shop and they have the BMW GT1 computer.

They did the cams, oil pump nut, and ZHP software. Car runs great, but my rev limiter has not changed (still at 6500, where it has always been). Brought it back and they confirmed that the correct software was loaded (and even spoke to a dealer master tech who confirmed that if the GT1 says it loaded, it loaded).

I can find no one else who has this particular issue and nobody I have talked to has an answer for me. My concern is mainly that I may not actually have the ZHP software (since the only objective way to confirm that would be the increased rev limiter). I know there were different versions of the software, and one theory is that perhaps in a later version they backed off the rev limiter. However, if that is the case I have found no one who can confirm this. So at this point I'm skeptical about whether I actually have upgraded software or not.

They said they can try and unload/reload the software but noted that you can only "code" the ECU so many times before you run into other issues.

I am out of thoughts on the cause of this, as is my shop. Any thoughts on this?

ps. I've been a member here for a few years, but because of the wealth of information I've never actually had to post a question!

Try "resetting" the ecu? Unplugging the battery for a bit, and hooking it back up?

And overall impressions of the cams?

According to the description on Tischer's web site, the "ZHP" software included with the "Performance Engine Kit" (cams, nut, software) only applies to 3/03 and later builds that used the MS45 DME. Your '02 model would have the MS43 DME. To the best of my knowledge, BMW doesn't provide an MS43 tune for the Performance cams. I have no idea what software is loaded on your car, probably the MS43 software you started with as the MS45 code shouldn't even load. All the factory ZHP cars have the 6800 rpm rev limit. Seems you have paid for software you can't utilize. While not strictly necessary, you're best bet at this point might be a custom tune from ESS or AA or you could just Shark it.

Quote:
* Intake camshaft
* Exhaust camshaft
* Special nut for the oil pump and pinion threaded connection
* DME software to be updated

To boost power to an even more intense level, where your heart is racing as fast as your tachometer, the logical place to start is at the source of that power, the BMW engine.

* Increases engine performance to 235 hp
* Boosts torque by 8 ft lb
* Raises redline to 6,800 rpm (from 6,500 in the regular 330i)
* Quicker acceleration out of corners, easier hil climbs and more aggressive power delivery

Available for E46 330i (without option Performance Package) from 03/2003 with electronic control unit MS 45.

Thanks guys, that information is very helpful. I wish I would have noticed that note about the different ECUs before.

I do think the cams were a worthwhile upgrade (given that the old cams were out of the car anyway). However, I'm not sure how much gain I will get from them without different software.

If you have an auto-trans the PCM is controlling the shift point!

I haven't looked into it. But there might be different software versions between non zhp and zhp transmission modules.

I think they lied to you about installing the ZHP software

The ZHP software was only available for 330s that came with the MS45.1 ECU, which is only found on 03/2003 and newer E46s (and even then, only US spec models). Older and euro spec E46 non-Ms have the MS43 ECU.

That was the biggest reason I decided to figure EDIABAS out instead of trusting someone with something that is impossible to verify without the right tools; not even dealers.
