Even if I beat the **** out of the car, my temperatures are still lower than when I'm sitting in traffic. I suspect I'd be able to delete the fan altogether if I never had to worry about traffic.
Agreed. I've been stuck in traffic (stop and go) in 98-100 degree temps with no issues either.

Wow! I didn't get any noticable MPG gain.

BUT, it was more than worth it to get rid of the noise the mech fan made.

Something else must have changed, 3MPG just from that swap is hard to imagine. Unless your entire commute consists of stop and go.

Nothing else was changed. Absolutely.
My commute is 90% hwy (otherwise my mpg wouldn't be even 23).

idk if you mentioned, but LOSE THE MECHANICAL FAN ASAP.

The fan and fan clutch have reputations of grenading and destroying radiators, pulleys, belts, and more.

+1

Nothing like a broken fan blade to ruin your day.

Any insight as to why my 04 zhp sedan 6speed has a mechanical fan and tranny cooler?

Was that standard for the zhp?

The transmission cooler is probably due to the car being a dumbed down M3 in terms of performance so I assume BMW put the cooler there for performance aspects.

Well, its been about two months I swapped clutch fan by the Behr electrical one and today I found out that:
1) A/C doesn't work
2) Electrical fan doesn't work
3) Thank god I didn't overheat the engine, but once I stopped and idled for 2 min the temp gauge started to climb. Func 7.0 showed temp 117C at that moment.

Looking for the reason of electrical fan malfunction now.

My 03 ZHP had an electrical fan and no tranny cooler. Maybe it began its life as an auto and went through a tranny swap? Or perhaps it was involved in a front-end collision and they rebuilt it using auto parts

Update. Connected PAsoft, it said error code 7D: Electric fan. No surprise here. Connected INPA, went to Aktivate, E-blower - no effect whatsoever. At this moment I already started to think "what's about warranty on that brand new Behr fan I got from ebay".... Decided to check 50A fuse in the glove box - it is not blown. I am sad. But.... Wait a sec, contacts of the fuse are kinda dark.... 600 grit sand paper and Electric Cleaner, fuse back into its place, INPA test again and, oh, miracle: fan works, it is back! Whew! A/C is also back, of course.

Whew! I was about to get sad, cause I'm about to do this with the same fan. I thought I bought a piece for a second. I'll be sure to put a fresh Fuse in as well.

Did this a long time ago even before this thread.

Zero issues for years. Do the swap, you'll be fine.

Is this swap compatible with M3's?

Hey Ken nice info, Thanks! You should make a DIY thread with step by step info with photos and have it locked. Although it was very entertaining reading all the dumb questions. Did anyone ever find out what the CFM difference is between the stock mechanical fan vs the Behr electric fan? I noticed the stocker is 11 blades and the Behr is 7 and they look similar in overall diameter.

I had a 97 Chevy K1500 I did this mod to. The truck would constantly over heat at idle with the AC on out here in Vegas during the summer. I installed the dual Flex A Lite 15" electric fans and I could let the truck idle all day long with the AC on afterward.
