^ It does sound amazing without the muffler. I have exhaust cutouts so I can have a straight pipes whenever I want. Unfortunatley they arent electric ones though

in short, yes modifying any part of your emission system is illegal in CA unless that mod had a CARB #.

Also most legit smog places will fail you on the visual inspection.

none the less unless you are too loud, most cops wont care unless you piss them off

You won't. I did a muffler delete and drove around for two years no problems. Did smog and passed everything. After a while you won't like the sound. I just put my muffler back on yesterday.

Mufflers don't have anything to do with emissions so you should still pass that test. Only removing the catalytic converters will fail emissions. I am pretty well against putting in headers without catalytic converters too. If more people knew how much **** they were spewing out of their exhaust after removing those, they might think twice about it. Your CC's remove an extremely large fraction of bad emissions from your exhaust.

You live in California. Yes it's illegal to modify your exhaust.

Don't know about the legalities but the pressure inside the exhaust system is an important part of the overall balance of power. Cutting a lump off is going to upset that balance. Your DME wont like it.

Newly added : E46 330 Muffler Delete

Quote:
As title says. Muffler delete. Replaced with straight pipes. Reused chrome tips. 90 bucks total. kept my old muffler in case i wana go back. Car is completely stock. Small back fire between 500-2k rpm through first and second gear. When i had my cone style ram intake filter on, back fire was FAR more than i personally enjoy. Heres a pic and a small vid of the car completely stock other than the delete.

Has Anyone Run A Muffler In Place of Their Resonator?

I'm looking to add headers to the turtle but am worried that it will be crazy loud given my muffler delete. I think it would be tough to run a muffler back by the exhaust tips given the break in piping (done to route tips on the passenger side) and thought to myself that I could perhaps stick a muffler where the resonators currently sit.

Has anyone had any success doing that?

Exhaust piping
