Check ignition coils. Had the same problem in 04 325xi, thought axels but it was ignition coils starting to fail but not throwing codes. Checked at dealer while fixing coolant issue, ordered coils and problem went away. Dealer showed coil readouts to me so I then replaced them myself.

This may be a long shot, but did you try turning off the DSC (traction/stability control) partly or fully? If it's mostly in the rain, just wondering if it could be the DSC kicking in. But then I guess you'd see the light flicker on and off.
Or since you have an xi, did you replace all four axles or just two? Wondering if it could be a CV joint.

Does it feel like the shaking is in the suspension/wheels or in the engine (like a misfire)? If in engine, could it be some sensor wire is shorting intermittently when wet? Cam sensor(s), knock sensor, wheelspeed sensor, etc. No codes?

Motor mounts, wheel bearings, sticky caliper, guibo., etc.

Try and be more specific about the vibration.

Try your engine mounts/transmission mounts. Also could be tires.

Although you have replaced the front axles doesn't mean you can eliminate it completely.

Who did your axle? And how good of a job did they do? Did they forget to torque the axle nuts to specs?

What brand of axle did you use? Did you replace them with OEM? Most Chinese made axles are garbage.

Vibtration under load in an Xi is normally due to inner CV boots (just went through this issue). If you've just replaced the fromt half shafts (you never mentioned manufacturer), hopefully it's not them. Heard of numerous guys that have replaced OE BMW half shafts with Chinese (think FCP Groton) and had almost the same issue as before replacing, however, assuming your half shafts are from a reputable supplier and are not the issue, I would look @ engine and tranny mounts. Also check conidition of driveshaft hanger bearing and guibo (@ front of driveshaft that runs from tranny to transfer case). You can check hanger bearing and general driveshaft condition by doing a brake stand. That's where u apply the brakes and with the brakes on and the car in drive, start to apply gas (press brake hard).... as you begin to apply gas, if there is an issue with hanger bearing or driveshaft, then you will fell vibrations under the car as the drivesshaft "bangs around". No vibrations, you can eliminate that. A good visual check of th ewhole system should allow you to see the fault.

Nachos,

I'm trying to figure out how I'd do a brake stand in my manual. Seems like I'd stall...but more important, I'm thinking whether I could do this with only two feet...or do I need to chock the front wheels as my brake and then just play with gas and clutch.

Thoughts?

Thanks.

Doug

@ Nachos23 - You can't do a brake stand in an AWD car, and in a RWD or FWD manual you need a throttle lock, 3 feet, or you have to be good at heel-toe. If you're talking about just putting torque through the driveshafts without actually making the driveshafts rotate, you could just put on the ebrake and try to drive forward (gently). However I don't think this will identify any problems.

@ OP - check out your guibo as others have said. And also let us know what brand of axles you purchased.
