My Ride: 2012 M3 COUPE E92
Better to keep convertible top down while in garage or

So I acquired a low mileage E46 M3 Convertible and it will strictly be my garage queen/weekend toy. Which means I'll probably drive it one or twice a month (if that) and only on sunny days.

Since my M3 will always be stored in the garage when not in use, the question I have is if it's better to keep the top down 24/7 so that way I don't have to keep opening/closing the top when I take her out OR is keeping the top down and stored in the trunk doing more harm because it's not working the mechanism at all.

Perhaps I am being very OCD but I care for my cars like I care for my family!

Let me know what you experts think.

Thank you!

I leave mine down for extended periods. One thing you might consider is getting a battery maintainer. I had a coon get in my car and step on the hazards which drained the battery because my maintainer wasn't plugged in. Then even after a jump, the top didn't work until my battery was back at full charge.

I put mine up unless I'm driving it the next day or so. It keeps out bugs, mice, spiders, dust and I think the creases in the top don't help the look.

If you are storing the car, keep the top up.

I've kept the top down for six weeks at a time with no negative consequence. I think the marks come from the folded top rubbing while you drive, so en extended time folded won't make a difference. if the car is stationery. It's good to exercise the mechanism, but if you know you're only going to drive it once a week and with the top open, just leave it open is fine.

Thank you guys. It will be driven once or twice a month. I guess I'll leave the top closed while parked to avoid the aforementioned dust and bugs accumulating. As long as I am. It damaging the convertible top mechanism by using it so infrequently.

Whether you leave it open or closed, I think as long as you operate the top every 2-3 weeks you should be good. Doing it at that frequency level is probably better than 4 times a day.

I leave my top down while parked I the garage. I live in a condo in a city where break ins are unfortunately a fact of life. I'd rather a criminal jump into my car than cut the top. Dust is obviously an issue, yet I park at the beach too so I just keep microfiber towels in the car to wipe away the dust.

Congrats on your new toy. You might find yourself wanting to use it more than once a month, at least at first
I'm not sure it makes much difference how you store top.
People with hard tops store the top down for long periods.
I store mine with the top up all winter. Outside, on battery tender.
I have not read anything about either method causing problems.
I could imagine reasons why either would be better. I could also imagine that using mechanism might be better than not using, or visa versa.
But they would just be imagined, since again, I have not heard or read of either really being better than the other.
Do what makes you happy

Better to keep convertible top down while in garage or

Cockpit cover is a genuine BMW accessory, got mine online. May have been $65 or $70 but I thought it was worth it.
As to the video: I put mine on the other way around, over the windshield first, Velcro around the mirrors, then close the deck lid on the tabs. Not so much up and down with the deck lid. Great for dust and debris or dew.

My main concern (one can get paranoid reading all the threads about top issues!) was the wiring loom breakage. Plus I have a failing right batwing...

Here's a link to prior threads. Search "cockpit cover" and you'll find it. You can use any of the usual BMW parts sites or search Amazon.
