it would be closer to 8k to boost the m54 it's obd2 (one off). The m50 is odb1, much easier to tune. The benefits of the m50 is that anyone/shop should be able to tune it. The m54 doesn't have that going for it. I'm not sure if you could get a m50 e46 plated?

Thanks for the help Brad.

I took it for a spin and the ride really feels smoother surprisingly. The car feels more "connected" within itself and on the road, I can't wait to get the FCABs in and get an alignment

Good, I was hoping it would. I just didn't want you to get your hopes up without an alignment.

Jay - Like I have have told Jacob, it's the tuning that gets expensive when it comes to any bmw/vanos motor. I would say go with what ever route will result in the cheapest tunning cost.

I also noticed that you said you want the max power to be between 2500 and 3000 rpm. Why is that, you don't really spend much time in that powerband?

We can talk about a custom turbo kit if you want jay... I can maybe help you out with some parts and such, and I have a guy that can tune also.

i am sure you know this but you don't have to wait until after fcabs to do alignment...unless they are badly torn, etc.

do you park outside / daily drive all seasons? I think Im the first owner of my car in 6-7 years to park outside over night in all seasons, and we have crazy weather in kansas. got down to -11*F last winter and up over 100*F this summer for sure, heat index like 118*f IIRC. I think the climate has taken a toll on all of the rubber stuffs on the car. Things like fcabs went bad and the weathering on the outside of the drivers side rear window has badly cracked and needs to be replaced

nope. my car has been garaged most of her life. if you exclude when she is being driven, she is garaged literally 90-95% of the time. she has seen rain maybe 5 or 6 times. she has never seen snow or salt.

yeah, weather can really take its toll on all components of the car including the bushings

I'm gonna go to longer gears. I'm using 3.46's right now, if I boost i want long gears and to build boost early so i can stay in the boost longer. if i reach max boost at 5k and shift at 7k. I only get a 2k power band. If I reach max boost at 2.5 to 3k and with long gears it will be a hwy monster!

The only gear that would matter in is 1st. in any other gear you don't even see 2.5 rpm so what's the point of having all that power there. 4k would be optimum on a 7k redline motor.

If you are cruisng on the higway at 3k rpm, you have all that power but happens when you downshift, no more max power because now you are higher in the rpm band. Why do you think every car maxes higher in the rpm band, your rpms climb slower the higher you get meaning that you spend more time in that section of rpm. If you launch from a light or even from a roll you are gonna be out of 2.5-3k in less than a second.

With the gearing that makes more sence. I just feel like there is a reason that every turbo/FI company tries to keep a common powerband with max power between 4-5k. These companies spend real time and money to R&D, they feel as if they have gotten it right.

So some 4'10" girl has been driving a like 1 year old M5 to school lately. Usually she drives her New 5 liter x5. I don't even think she's 16 yet
