What about a 4.44. Talked to the guy I'm having do my gears and he said he has one ordered for the e46 M3, original buyer backed out. He said it is very common in europe.

4.10 - 13% Increase - 293 tq
4.44 - 22.5% Increase - 318.5 tq

Thoughts? I'm trying to find more info, theres only one person in the states running this ratio that anyone is aware of so I'm trying to get ahold of him.

I know 4.56 is real popular in the mustang world. But their trans ratios are much different, as well as engine RPM's.

Yeah I'm just trying to figure out what my top speed will be and what the benefits are over the 4.10's.

You have a 5spd right? 5th gear is 1:1 if I recall correctly.

And what size tires do you have?

6spd, 4th gear is 1:1. Tires will be 275/35/18.

For a racecar you want to stay in 3rd, 4th, & 5th gear so gears is clearly a good option for a car that has very little torque below 4k rpm.

Engine RPM: 7800
Vehicle Speed: 130.165005326175
Read End Gear: 4.56

Thats figured in 1:1 trans gear.

So in 4th gear (1:1)

Engine RPM: 8000
Read End Gear: 4.44

My top speed would be 137. I wonder what my overall top speed would be in 6th.

Andy - don't you have a calculator for that somewhere.

You can type in your trans ratio on this one.

http://www.currieenterprises.com/ces...Calculator.htm

275/35/18 tire diameter is 25.7" based on this calc.

Yes, I do. But I don't know if its exactly correct anymore.

in any case, your top speed would be as follows:

4th gear: 111mph
5th gear: 137mph
6th gear: 165mph

5th gear is 1:1, not 4th.

This makes more since. So if 5th is 1:1 then why do you dyno in 4th.

Now to decide on 4.10 or 4.44.

You can get an idea of what its like by comparing Final-drive ratios with 4.44 and 3.73.

3.73 FDR
1=16.23
2=9.33
3=6.19
4=4.59
5=3.73
6=3.17

and with 4.44
1=19.31
2=11.10
3=7.37
4=5.46
5=4.44
6=3.77

http://www.grimmjeeper.com/gears.html

SO, with the 4.44's driving in 6th will be like you are in 5th with your current 3.73 rear end. At 7500rpm with 3.73's in 5th, is only 2mph different than 4.44's in 6th gear. So i'd say thats a fairly accurate comparison.

I'll probably just play it safe and get the 4.10's. It will still be a huge increase over stock. Plus I'm getting a ZF LSD, I'm keeping those specs a secret though.

I wish I could send you a copy of that calculator already filled out. If you fill in your trans ratios, rear end, and tires size. But do the 2nd column with the other rear gears it shows you how it all compares in speeds down at the bottom.

Top speed with 4.44 in 6th gear is still 150+

Screenshot works too...

4.44 on the left, 3.73 on the right, that calculator only goes up to 7500rpm.
