thats what I meant to say

Those are sedan doors too. They obviously started with a sedan, or atleast had one as their donor car.

My god that stance! Looks like an R/C car with the suspension showing when the body panels are off.

Looks like we've got a couple new-jacks to the club.

I made a few new cars in Forza 3.

1000 hp and 1800 lbs = top speed limited by lack of traction

Pull up in the paddock and see a ferrari 458 running in the advanced group. This should be fun.

Passed the Ferrari (he had to be under driving that car), they had someone with a radar gun comng up to Alfa 0 and the Ferrari and I clocked the fasted time with a tie at 119 mph. Kinda disapointed because my spedo said 134, then again I don't know at exactly what point we were getting gunned.

Edit: Forgot to mention, there was a ZR1, C6 Z06, and Shelby GT which all should have been much faster than me.

On another note, I weighed the car with a dead even 1/4 tank of gas and it weighed in at 2,855 lbs. So with the lexan windows, AC, and some other misc. things gone this winter I should easily be in the 2,700's. For an e46 M3 I've very very happy with that.

My tires are done though.

I did run one 1.31 lap but the majority were in the 1.32-1.34 range. Still very happy with those times seeing how James feels a race grade damper will give me 3-5 seconds. I'm also going to step up to a more aggresive tire for next year so I should be dipping well into the 1.20's.

anybody out there have some winter wheels/tires they want to sell me before i go off and buy brand new stuff from tire rack?

PS - not to say James doesn't know his stuff at all, but 3-5 seconds from dampers is surprising assuming that you're already running something that doesn't totally suck.

That's the problem is I am running something that totally sucks. Single adjustable Bilstein PSS9's. They came on the car and I wasn't going to spend the money on suspension until the PSS9's were clearly holding me back, it is that time. I'm not saying James is god but he did set up the NASA GTS3 and 4 regional chapionship cars.

Edit: that 3-5 seconds would also assume that I can dial the suspenion in correctly, which will be the hard part.

i'll give you 3-5 seconds going from a stock suspension to a dialed in setup, but Bilstein PSS9s can't be THAT bad. what sort of spring rates do you guys run on these cars?

i have single adjustable steel bodied koni's on my race car that work great. sure, there's improvement to be had by going with the 2812s or whatever they are, but the 8041s are 80-90% of the way there.

Most guys that are racing the e46 are running 700-900's in the front and 900-1100's in the rear with great success. I'm currently on 550/700's and you're right they aren't terrible but they aren't great either. Josh Smith (NASA GTS3 champ) went from double adjustable TC Klines (way better than the PSS9) to a double adjustable dual resevoir Moton and picked up just shy of 4 seconds at Mid Ohio his home track. I'm not that familar with that track but I don't see 3+ seconds being that much of a strectch.

Have you had your e46 M3 out on track yet?

i have not....and i do acknowledge the M3 is different than my miata, but at the end of the day they're both just tools for speed and the goal of keeping the tire in contact with the pavement is the same.

i don't doubt that somebody has bolted on better shocks and gone 5s/lap faster, but i doubt the shocks are what did it.

at least within the miata SCCA world, the ultimate lap time achieveable between off-the-shelf Bilstein Sport shocks that were available on the R-package cars, and those same bilstein's revalved and shortened for higher (race) spring rates is negligible......tested by drivers that can click off 10 or so laps within a half second of each other. the biggest difference i've noticed going from the basic bilstein shocks to the koni 8041 race shocks is the ease in which that speed is achieveable, and improved tire performance throughout the race. it also is easier to control when getting aggressive over big curbs like they have at road atlanta.

i suspect what is happening is that when people bolt on better shocks the car does FEEL better and inspires more driver confidence to go faster. that is where the speed comes from, the driver. not so much the parts themselves. heck i've been in endurance racing situations where we blew a shaft seal and totally lost a rear shock. so as not to lose time in the pits swapping it out we just kept going. the car was a bit of a handful to drive, but our laptimes were still there.

just some food for thought.

PS - there's obviously some goofy stuff going on with the BMW suspensions, those look like spring rates for a FWD car to me! not that it's really relevant, but i'm on 900lb fr 450lb rears for the miata.
