Yeah but atleast they are producinf cars specifically for the tack like the leguna seca inspired boss 302 (or 5.0, I cant remember which). I would compare that car more to the m series then a svt or anything else. A car made specifically for performance and by performance BMW mean the road coarse not the drag strip.

I miss the days when there was just an m3 and m5, the good old days. Who the **** needs a m6, x5m, or x6m. I kinda like the 1m, it makes a bit of sense.

Id agree its a great day for the boss's. But I was saying that svt has taken a backburner to shelbys label selling of late. Also good to see gm and ford focus on road course performance with their latest offerings!

As for the comment about diesels, I think they are the future! New transmission technologies offering 8+ gearboxes reduce issues with low redlines. Im not big on recent motorsports events, but arent diesels doing quite well in their top classes?

The audi diesel does better at 24hr of le mons because it doesn't have to fuel as much.

The "///M badge" is all about money these days, chaps. It's sad to say, but I think the second generation of the M division is upon us. It was kicked off with the E70 X5M and and E71 X6M... the AWD, auto only, SUV with no purpose. M cars are now about providing quality performance and luxury to those people with deep pockets who want to show off a bit. Its no longer about taking a civilian chassis, handing it over to the M division, and letting them put in a mad engine and racing inspired suspension, resulting in a few select cars that were just comfy enough to sell to a select few. Its sad to see BMW walk away from specialized M cars, but understandable: they're a business, in it to make a profit. Right now, efficiency is big, fuel is expensive, and there is plenty of competition.

That said, the new cars are pretty awesome. They don't really deserve the M badge, but they deserve something. The new M550d X-drive has a 3.0 liter, triple turbocharged diesel that makes 381 hp and 546 lb-ft while still getting an average of 38mpg us (german rating).

I think this means the M5 will have x-drive, there will be no M5d, and hopefully the M5 will be a little more performance oriented than it would be without the M550d.

imo I think the last ///M cars are the e60M5 and the e46M3. I think all the others are just heavy fast shitey cars

They added the Audi r8, ferrari 458, and viper to the grand am lineup this year. Kinda cool.

Kinda sad to see the prototype Ford's walk away from the BMW's on the straights.

I've always been surprised that RX-8's can hang with Turner's M3. How does that happen???

There's lots of 4 wheel offs in a race like this, when you are consistently trying to drive 11/10ths it happens.

The bmws run pretty mild engines where the mazdas run heavy built motors. Power to weight on each class is very similar. A car pulling harder down the straight over another is more about the exit speed from the previous corner then its overall power down the straight. Come on man, read those books.

Oh yeah. I know how important corner exit speed is. The rules and regulations are not as fresh in my mind as they are in yours. I forgot how these cars are all very close in power/weight ratio. Gearing, downforce, and weight could still be factors though.

Only thing that changes in weight is fuel load. Which wouldnt ever be a ton because the tanks really arent that big.

I love that Travis pastrana is racing in the ferrari, he stalled it leaving the pit his first stint and just about t boned a Porche leaving pit lane.

Yup.

He's in the same car as waltrip. They must have cared less about winning and more about a star studded lineup. To bad the turner car with the better drivers had engine trouble and is out.

Waltrip is the nascar dude and yeah they are in the red 458.

Yeah the 94 is out and the 93 is like 4 laps off the lead lap. Which isnt really that much with 17 or whatever hours left.

Pastrana doesn't appear to be very good, hes all over the place and has already had a couple offs.

Damn I need to go to bed so i can be back up at 8am to watch the finish.
