Thats basically what I am doing... but I am taking the extra loan money and hoping to purchase as SC (with some additional money I already have) for my M3... ultimately killing two birds with one stone. After all purchasing any car is never a wise investment... you hardly ever get what you paid for it more much less make profit.

So if I can walk away with a nice DD and a SC... thats ok in my book

Just another thing for you S54 guys to worry about. Kinda glad I'm moving to an e92. Between the subframe, vanos, smg, etc. that car seems to be a ticking time bomb once it reaches higher mileage.

Rod Bearings are an ooooooooold problem. there was a recall, my car got new ones.

if they fail then I guess ill just have to do a stroker kit

No no no all of those cars have had the rod bearing recall. As well as I know the e46 M3 you think I didn’t know there was a recall on this, come on man? There are some people that feel the rod bearings are a maintenance item in the S54. James feel they should be replaced every 50k miles at a minimum and even more so for cars that see 8k rpm frequently.

I guess most of us don’t have the dad account when it comes to things like this. Replacing these preventively is $300 in parts (and that’s with coated bearings and ARP bolts) + labor. That’s 5-10 times cheaper than buying a new/used motor.

I’m just trying to make people aware of issues that they don’t know about.

My rod bearings were replaced at 24k under the recall, my car has 84k on it so my rod bearings in effect have only 60k on them. I think I'm good for a while on those.

I know there was a recall... but and correct me if im wrong. I thought this was primarily an issue in 2001-2003.5??

I know you've torn apart and rebuilt dozens upon dozens of S54's so you should know what's best.

Thank god... I keep looking at the big picture of all these preventative maintenance items I need/want to do this winter and looking at the whole picture and not in small chunks make me wanna sell....

I think with some of the e46 M3 issues like the subframe and vanos hub/bolts you should take care of them as soon as you can. I say that because from the data it seems as if there is no rhyme or reason that they occur. I've seen those two happen with any model year, any mileage, and it doesn't seem to matter if the car has seen track time or not. I think the major misconception by e46 M3 owners is that these issues only occur if they track their car and that just isn't the case.

With the bearing issue I mentioned I think it has less to do with the car itself and more to do with the fact that it is a high strung motor from the factory. This is one thing I think does reflect directly from how you drive. The only reason I mentioned it is because I've heard from vary reputable builder/race teams (VAC, VS, BimmerWorld, & Turner) that this is something they recommend. Since most of the people on here track their cars I thought it was something worth mentioning.
