Question When and why did BMW reverse the M/S + and - shift on the E46 Steptronic cars?

I'm working on my DCT Sport Shifter Retrofit this weekend and I noticed that the M/S + and - and reversed on my 2001 330i compared to whats on the DCT knob indicator itself. Then I noticed that my neighbors 2005 330i has the M/S - and + reversed.

Did BMW change over the Steptronic box at some point? Is it a completely different step box or the same but just with the - and + swapped around?

from a 2001 330i

compared to a 2005 330i

and what is on the knob that I am putting in my car...

My '03 coupe is the same as the '05 in your pictures. Pull to up shift and push to down shift.

My 01 is the same as yours and I have always thought the same thing when I drive anything newer then mine. I'm pretty sure they switched in 02 but not 100%. Anyway I think it makes more sense to push UP to UPshift and pull DOWN to DOWshift dunno why they ever changed it.

I feel like its more natural to pull to upshift and push to downshift, it goes with the force of the car, and it seems more natural to me coming from a manual.
I had an Audi with tiptronic, and you push to upshift, pul to downshift. Whenever i put it in manual i was always pulling to upshift but ended up high reving the RPMs!

atleast its not a MB pulling left to right..

mine is push to upshift and pull to down, like someone said, it has to do with the natural reaction, and the gforces ..

my car is really complicated.....

1st - push

4th - pull
5th - push
6th - pull
R - hard left push

and i have to used my left foot to make each shift successful

oh and on a more serious note since my post wasn't the LEAST bit funny.... i always thought that the bimmer's were pull to upshift, push to downshift
