I don't think $500 is at all unreasonable to install springs on all four. The rears are pretty simple. But the fronts take a fair amount of time. Just removing each strut requires a fair amount of work. Then you gotta compress the springs, remove, replace, etc. Then you need an alignment. $500 is reasonable.

Just diy... its easy! Especially the rear, the front is more of a pain atleast taking out the struts, but besides that it should take no more than a couple hours.
I put my H&Rs with no previous experience.

I have a buddy that works on a lot of e46's- he said he charges an hour (possibly 1.5) to do 4 springs. Once you do it, the second time will take about a third of the time.

3 spring compressors make the fronts easy to do.
