2005 M3 6MT w/ 58,000 miles. no subframe issues, just had insp 2 performed. RTABs, FCABs, the whole alphabet soup of things are also still good currently. Will need new rear brakes in about 1,000 miles.

I know that the E46 does have some "quirks", mainly the window regulators, the front control arm bushings, and the rear sub-frame.

I've got a 2005 330Ci Convertible ZHP with 45K miles on it and I'm wondering whether to keep it. The possibility of sub-frame failure bothers me, but that's because I've been reading all the sub-frame failure threads lately.

However, I haven't had any problems with the car so far, so I thought I'd make a "roll call" type thread for everyone who hasn't had a sub-frame failure.

Please list your model year, model, transmission, and mileage.

I'll start: 2005 330Ci Convertible, 6 speed manual, 45,000 miles
I dont think anyone has mentioned this yet.....and I dont mean to piss on your point because I mostly agree with it...BUT...the subframe issues are almost enirely before 2002. So your car will not have the problem, nor will most of the respondents here with 2002+ cars. The question should be "who does not have a subframe failure on thier 99-01 E46"

My Ride: Many
Car : E46 325i
Year : 2001
Version : US 184hp
Transmission : 5 speed manual
Milleage : 95625 miles
Suspension : Rear heavy duty bilstein, Front stock

Driving style : Having pleasure on hard road everyday. No track, but road here look like hell. Not in city.
Climat : -35 winter, 30 celcius summer

No crack for now. Maybe it have been fix, no reccord for the 2 owner before me. I asked BMW canada about this common problem, they told me that if its happen they will fix my car for free and there is NO limit time. In USA, the limit date is september 2 2010. BMW dont want class action against them like it happen in USA, so they offer free repair, its cool!

When I was at Turner Motorsports a couple of years ago they had said that they've never seen an XI with subframe damage. Any othert XI's care to chime in.
It's true. Xi's don't have this failure. It's obvious XI's have a better build quality than i's, the more you poke around.

Is there a correlation between subframe failure and cars built in South Africa?

I know there are a bunch of fanatics on here with SA cars- I know first hand from my stealership years that they are all garbage.

That's a good point. I know that the issue is more common with the 99-01 model years, but I wanted to gather data across all of the production years.

Plus, I was hoping that there would be a lot of responses to help quell the fear that your rear suspension will fall off one day just because you own an E46.

The Xi's are built on the exact subframe as the i's. What prevents Xi subframe failure is the fact that a significant portion of the torque is being sent to the front wheels.

2001 330i w/ steptronic, stock, 136k. Driving is mildly aggressive, but Northern road can be bumpy. Have checked myself and haven't seen any issues. I suppose I should take it into the dealer this summer to have them check it before their deadline.

2004 330Ci ZHP 6spd 83,000 miles. I drive pretty spirited most of the time, no subframe damage. I think the Zhp comes with beefier FCAB and CA than regular E46's.

My Ride: reclining rear seats
When you have to create a thread to list the exceptions, then subframe failure is the rule and is common.
