So I am back to white

today i removed red LEDs from needles, problem was, as it was mentioned by somebody, that the wires will not last long and now on the smallest one one wire was broken.
Better solution is then Manzrik's.

Guys, do You know what is different on these pics?

This guy did green:

there are more colors on his website too
the green actually looks pretty awesome.

all the cluster LED are plcc-2. the backlighting for the AC and radio LCD screens are most likely plcc-2. but, the backlighting for the buttons might not be. i haven't cracked open the AC or the head unit faceplate yet, but i did open up the switch panel (the thing with the buttons for heated seats/dsc/etc). the button backlight LEDs are very, very small. my first guess would be 1206 size, but i'm not sure. hard to tell by just looking at them.

Nice. I've been following this thread for a while and am very impressed.

I wanted to paint the back of the face plate black a while ago but I haven't cuz I wanna add some LEDs directly behind the black area for more markings. http://www.fallastarmedia.com/ledproj.htm is what I'm gonna do. I've contacted the admin of that website and he's gonna work with me to get it working on the E46. Still waiting for the circuit board from him in the mail. I need to order a few different type of LEDs and see which one work/look the best.

Do you mind sharing the schematic diagram of the light sensor?

1) paint the back of the face plate black except the lettering just like profor did.
black tape the smd directly behind the marks on the back of the face plate. If it's too thick for the needles to swing around, I would shave the transparent piece a little, just the part behind the LEDs since I don't need light for that part anyway.

2) put the LEDs directly behind the transparent piece and paint the sides of the LEDs, maybe the edge of the top to make it shine more focused to the mark in front. So the marks still lite by the original LED and color changed when rpm hits that mark.

3) LEDs on the inner side of the gauge ring.

Just some thought. Still waiting for a used cluster in the mail. Not gonna take mine out and put it back in for nothing.
