I think he's showing us he put the LEDs directly under the faceplate. You have white LEDs so your red stays red. He's using blue which make the red purple and dim.

Once you do the dash you will be confident enough to explore other parts of the car using the same method.. its pretty easy, i was a bit scared at first.
The aircon unit will actually pop out without any screws, then just disconnect the harness at the back.

mines grey. it's like dark grey. the only time you could tell is in direct sunlight or when you have the cluster outside. i thought it was black, but nope.

Free bump for a good thread!

Also a question for profor and manzrik: any chance of combining your two needle-lighting mods into one DIY like profor's pdf document with the needle-mounted position? The white needles on a colored dial looks awesome. I plan to keep the OEM orange backlighting (and do black on the back of the dial) and do the white needles but I'm a bit unsure of the wiring when the two methods are combined.

Since manzrik's method uses 4 LEDs in series, the resistors used in profor's writeup would no longer work. Also, is there a place to wire in the LEDs so that they dim with the rest of the car? Right now I have the Dynavin V5 that doesn't dim so things are at full bright to match, but I'd like to preserve the functionality.

Both the blue and white backlighting jobs look awesome. But I'd go crazy and HAVE to do the whole car so that's not an option for me. (OCD much?)

Oh, and what wattage soldering iron do you recommend? I soldered a modchip into an Xbox but lifted a trace in the process. That was a ROYAL PITA to fix and I don't want to repeat it with my car.

Again, great job!

Ok so quick question. I didn't get to read through all 13 pages so it might have been answered:

A) how do you tell the polarity of the existing LEDs? (I'm assuming negative is the side with the small - but I am not sure)

B) what type of Surface mount LEDs are already there?

C) (most important) will 0603 110mcd 20mA 3.3V LEDs work? I have 8 blue ones already so would I be able to use these guys? (yeah I know they're small, but I have nimble fingers)
