This is why I love this forum. Now I really want to do this, even though I am not that great at soldering. I have a few questions.

1. What MCD is bright enough (but not too bright)? I found these leds with 500mcd:

http://www.unique-leds.com/index.php...roduct_id=2051

Would these work? Or would something brighter work better?(1500mcd):

http://www.electron.com/leds-smd/plcc2lw6ct/

Also I found this on another forum about how to remove the leds:

http://www.scionlife.com/forums/showthread.php?t=110698

I suggest to use leds with more mCd and then adjust the brightness by changing resistors if necessarry.
Other thing is to make separate PWM for controlling the brightness of the cluster only.

I have a feeling I am quickly going to get in over my head if I try to do this myself. Is there anyone in NJ that can do this?

I haven't read all the pages in this thread, so I may be missing something, but isn't there already a knob that controls the brightness of the cluster?

No no it is my idea, because once i changed the color to blue on one E46. BUT. the guy said that it is too bright and he would like to have all the other things normally at full brightness but the cluster at lowest possible. it is weird but okay. so i tried to do some investigation and to the instrument cluster lead the grey/red wire which in his case supply the backlight of the cluster. so i was thinking to do another PWM generator, to control just the cluster itself. nothing else.
worst thing is that it could not be connected to the grey/red wire, but it should be connected to the terminal 15 for example so the cluster will lit up just turning the ighition on.

What are the tiny LEDS in dash switches ???

Hi everyone.

There are some awesome dash conversions here, They have inspired my to do my first mod to my beemer.

Ive converted the window switches, the air con and the light switches to blue ( I thought I would wait and do the cluster last as its the most expensive bit).

Where Im stuck is the row of switches on the dash (HK, Heated seats, DSC etc)

When you open these up they are illuminated with a tiny LED, much smaller than the ones in the AC unit or the cluster.

Can anyone share what these LED's are and where to get them please ?????

Thanks in advance.

Oh, anyone thinking od trying these mods I say do it ! Im no expert and havent soldered since high school, It took me way longer than a few hours but no problems or damage to report.

I'll UL pics of my new dash as soon as I screw everything back together.

Well i had the same problem on X5 the LEDs were tiny, but i had several leds so i used 0805 i guess. these are smaller and You can, with little patience, solder them on positions

Tiny Led Dash Switches

Thanks profor and TR4G- for your help with the Tiny LEDS

The good news is after learning how to remove those tiny 0603 leds

( good tutorial)

I managed to fit the standard PLCC2 3258 LEDS in their place no problem at all.

Great news for anyone trying to mod these switches
