Now that the TX heat has come down, it's time for my MTB to come out!

I just went to Mammoth mountain to mountain bike last week. It was fun but I wouldn't really recommend it. The dirt sucked.

im toying with the idea of entering my 1st MTB race in a few months. My room mate is running the big event, and i may tag along and do the amateur event just to get a feel for it.
I just dont think im in shape for it, nor am i used to riding with clip in pedals yet. would make a helluva learning experience tho.

I did a few races last year. I was amazed how competitive even the beginner class is. The best thing you can do is get a road bike and do spin classes for cardio. Do like Monday, Wednesday, and Friday for cardio, and ride your mountain bike on Sunday to train your skills. You have a huge advantage if the trail the race will be on is local. Knowing the course helps out tremendously during a race.

How long is the race? No offense, but with only casual riding as training, you will probably finish last.

It is a great experience, and I recommend doing it either way.

either way, i wont have time to train for it. so if i do, i'll just be doing it for the workout and for fun. when i asked my roomie about it, this is what he said...

No climb is longer than a 1/4 mile that I can think of. The first half of the course is hard on your legs, the back half allows you some opportunity to cool down and is mostly flat.
im by no means Mr. Endurance, but im good for short sprints, or bursts, or whatever, thats how i am with ANY sport, or cardio activity. I havent been running but ive been killing my legs in my weekly workout.
this is the event..

He said the beginner course is the same, just less laps, i think i'll be fine.

My Ride: What else?
do it

no one is ever really ready for their first race, because it is impossible to train for one without having experienced it.

If I'm home in time and can get more comfy with the clip in pedals. I'm gonna do it. Which I should be able to do.

so how do you take a jump? how do you set up for it? I am finally getting comfortable on my bike, and picking up speed down the hills. However I always slow down when I get to the jumps cus it just feels like I'm gonna fly off the bike lol

^Jumps are pretty difficult. I still don't really like them.

I've been putting in the miles on mine. Pretty comfortable on the clip in pedals now. Really really like this bike.
Did 6 miles on Sunday, up in Williamsburg on one of the less difficult trails and then another 6 today on a more tricky but less difficult local course. Probably gonna head back up to Williamsburg again next Sunday.
