Greek unemployment at new record high

Greek unemployment hit a new record of 25.4% in August as five years of recession and government spending cuts continued to take their toll, with young people hit hardest.

The Greek statistics office ELSTAT said the seasonally-adjusted jobless number rose to 1.27 million in August, up 352,000 from the same month a year earlier when the unemployment rate stood at 18.4%. In July 2012, the figure was 24.8%

Nearly 6 in 10 workers under the age of 24 are now without a job. A third of workers aged 25-34 are unemployed, ELSTAT said.

The figures underscore the social cost of a recession that has cut the size of the Greek economy by about 20% since 2008, and efforts by the government to rein in its soaring budget deficit -- projected to hit 190% of gross domestic product next year.

Greece has received two bailouts from international creditors, but payments of funds under the second program were suspended earlier this year after Athens fell behind its fiscal targets.

The Greek parliament Wednesday approved a further round of labor market reforms and spending cuts in the face of violent street protests by tens of thousands of Greeks, angry at years of belt-tightening that have slashed the living standards for many of Greece's population of 10 million.

Greece estimates that nearly 3 in 10 people are now materially deprived in one way or another, up by nearly 50% since before the crisis hit.

The new austerity measures, and a revised 2013 budget, both need parliamentary support if Greece is to stand any chance of receiving the next 31.5 billion euros in bailout funds from the EU, European Central Bank and International Monetary Fund.

The budget will be debated Sunday and eurozone finance ministers could agree as early as next week to give Greece two more years to meet its fiscal targets, paving the way for release of the bailout money, which would avert insolvency and a catastrophic exit from the eurozone.

Critics of the government argue that the austerity measures are pulling Greece into a downward spiral of economic contraction and impoverishment. The economy is forecast to contract by 4.5% in 2013, a sixth straight year of recession.

Neither does a true democracy, or actually a democratic republic. That is the real answer! Let's push that on everyone else.

Somewhat related story of Greeks in the US:

My wife and I were looking at buying a foreclosure for our new house, one of the first we went to was a nice house in a Denver suburb OBVIOUSLY owned by a Greek family. Huge murals of Greece in the kitchen, bedrooms, everywhere. Also had some kind of funky Greek fountain in the middle of the basement.

Anyway, come to find out they owed $750,000 combined over three mortgages on the property and it was currently for sale for $289,000. Somebody sure took a bath on that one.

Democracy/DR has done more good for mankind and human rights than communism by far. It isn't even close.

edit: I don't want to push anything on anyone, we have our hands full here in the US

Democracy is good for people, if and only if the people are educated and have the same vision.
if people have different vision, the country would have difficulty to propel ahead.

Some country just better off with communism. If anything, China is doing better than most democracy countries nowadays.

I think it would be pretty easy to argue that China is like Diet Communism, if anything.

ALL of China's growth has come from moving away from Communism to a market-based economy.

Yes, I understand China still has Communism Lite from a political perspective, but economically, Communism was an absolute disaster, and killed millions and millions of people.

As soon as they began implementing market reforms, their economy took off, and has grown to what it is today.

Hint: Look around at all those new Chinese billionaires. They're the ones who built the new Chinese economy, not the people's party.

China's growth is artificial in some regards. How many cities has the Government built that are essentially ghost towns?

China is facing their own credit bubble problems. Their economy has already showed signs that it's slowing.

Sorry about your pothole dilemma, but I wouldn't generalize to the entire US. We spend a lot of money on transpiration infrastructure in my area. I see everything from 3 lane roads being expanded to 5 lanes, old roads being completely dug up and redone from the beginning, old bridges being torn down then completely rebuilt. They're adding a new express rail to our EL and are renovating the older stops.

To those that bitch & whine about 'stuff' in the US, I suggest they take a business trip (not island hopping) to Greece and follow closely on politics vs. country's progress, over the last four years of economic 'crisis'. They ll end up reconsidering faster than ...Road Runner.

Things are u-g-l-y, the country is completely corrupt in every aspect. Both political parties that ruined the country over the last 39 years 'buying' citizen's votes, have destroyed the backbone of the economy by overtaxing the private sector and businesses (90% of business owners are in the red!!!!) on a failing economy. Meanwhile, the overcrowded public sector ('their' voters) have not lost any of their benefits, nor their jobs (it is estimated that they need to fire over 200K people). It would take pages to get into detail, but the worse is yet to come...

Which leaves me with LESS than 75 days in democratic_my_a$$, Soviet-Communist Hellenic Republic.

Enjoy the rest of your summer.
