Tell that to my ticket from an airplane in Iowa and an unmarked Dodge Intrepid (pacing me, no radar), and my 3 traffic light camera automated tickets that were for bologna reasons!

All in all though, in the 1990s I had a top of the line Bel 745sti radar detector, in the 2000s I've had no radar detector. My combined legal and detection/evasion equipment fees are 1/10th this part of the millennia compared to the earlier half.

Just a POV, I'm sure many people make great use out of them, but IMHO I think it's just sort of a false sense of security, especially since in my crazier days I've been ticketed for a lot of moving violations other than excessive speed too.

Also, it's an arms race that the consumer will always come out on the loosing end of. Every cop car in my small town has a frigging handheld FLIR gun, those are like $10k! They turnover vehicles, equipment, radar technologies, faster than I change my sheets. Yes. .. I know radar still primarily uses X, Ka, & Lidar or whatever, but techniques within the modes of operation are always in flux.

Sorry I really don't want to start a flame war or a pro vs. anti radar detector thread - if you're happy with what you're doing, keep on doing it.

^^^ ok I just got one cus I like telling people my car know where da police be at. Lol I only use mine on the freeway because I don't speed in the streets and I'd get pulled over anyway for my exhaust. It has saved me a few times though.

In 1996 mine told me where police, high powered microwave ovens, and jewelry stores were at! lmao. . .ya it was semi useful on the highway but just due to the urban layout of where I am it's sort of useless 85% of the time.

It also almost started to give me panic attacks, they need to have a beep that slowly ramps up in volume, not one that makes it sound like your life support has been sabotaged.

High 5 for also getting a ticket for loud exhaust!

My grandpa gag had one in his car I mean, since I have any memories at all - like 1982, when the only brand available was "Fuzz Buster" and they were the size of a large VCR.

Lol I almost got one right now actually. The cop turned around but luckily I was right by my house so I just turned in my driveway. I had a really nice cop a few months ago. Ok he wasn't nice. He wrote me an exhaust ticket with STOCK exhaust on my GTI. Cost me $108 at the state reff. I refuse to take my exhaust off on the M3. It's toooooo seeeexxxxxyyyyyy!!!!!!!

As a guy who has every piece of paper about his E46 since it birth on 4/30/2001 scanned and organized, I'm pissed I never thought to scan and save my tickets over time (and my various legal defenses against some of them). A lot of them were for funny random stuff you wouldn't think a normal person would get cited for.

Actually, this is quite ironic. . .in 1997 I was racing my '96 Impala SS against an E36 M3, which was still pretty new on the streets at the time. It was Dakar yellow, and it was some guy with his g/f. I had straight open dual exhaust out of the slightly detuned Vette LT-1, at idle it was sweet and lumpy, at WOT it sounded like a top fuel dragster fuel on nitro methane.

So there was a cop that was going over a bridge that went OVER the highway but wasn't connected to it, he later said "I heard you coming down on that BMW from about 1/2mi away, so I got out of my vehicle and grabbed the radar gun. . .at that time you were doing 100mph and rising fast."

M3 ended up getting away from me (and the police!), mostly because I came up to my exit. We had played back and forth on a relatively empty highway at like 1am for about 15 min.

Moments later I see a squad car behind me, and a tow truck in front of me. . .and another squad car along side me! I'm literally shaking and I have my license and registration in my hand ready to go, I roll down my window and he says "step out of the car and put your hands behind your back please. . ."

$3800 (which at the time, might as well have been $380,000 to me), two court appearances, 6 months of a restricted license, and 90hrs of community service later. . .ha - I learned a pretty good lesson and thankfully was able to shake out most of the ridiculously stupid young male kamikaze driving program by age 19-20 or so. I barely even speed now and can't remember the last time I floored it from a stop light.

Months later I saw the M3 on the highway. . .no words or gesture could convey my feelings.

I personally hate mine. For every 100 warnings I get, only about 1 is actually a cop. And I would conservatively estimate that it misses about 50% of the cops I see on the interstate. I don't even bother using it locally - my false rate would be closer to 0.1% if I did.

I have to disagree, but as you said it's all personal preference. I love my V1 because of the peace of mind it gives me. The last ticket I had came out to right around $450, which is the cost of the V1. It was a 'no-brainer' for me to spend that amount on something that has the potential to protect me against another ticket.

It is important to note that I have found the effectiveness of the V1 varies state to state. Where I live during the school year in Arizona, my V1 is indispensable. It detects and reports 9/10 cops I encounter on the road with ample time for me to react. My time spent in San Diego is a bit different. Almost every warning I get here is for a false alarm, and when I do see cops, I gather they must not be using radar because I don't hear a peep out of the V1.
