BMW X5 M vs. Porsche Cayenne Turbo

I am talking about the new 2011 Cayenne Turbo here. Disregarding price, which gets your vote? Note that even though the X5 M has more power, it is also quite a bit heavier.

Also, check out this review of the new Cayenne Turbo (pretty insane drifting for a SUV):

actually i change my vote. i think id pick the porsche. i just picked the x5 because i think the cayenne's ugly, but with that kinda performance, i think id pick the ugly car

Purely from a cosmetic point of view I like the looks of the BMW better... the Cayenne headlights remind me too much of a 996!

Don't get me wrong, the Cayenne Turbo is a marvelous ride but pales in comparison to the engineering behind the ///M X5 and X6. Though I have to admit, the seats are not very comfortable in the rear of the X5. They're rather stiff and uncomfortable on long rides.

Don't you think the M models of the X5 and X6 are just a way to make more money? What happened to the BMW M "formula" which consisted of N/A engines, rear-wheel drive, and manual transmissions?

i have noticed that too. I wish they were more like E65/E66/E67/E68 rear seat

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but BMW is moving towards forced induction for their entire M line-up. The new M5 will have a bi-turbo V8, the next generation M3 will have a turbo i6 (unsure if single or bi-turbo setup). Given the advances in technology and the virtual elimination of turbo lag, the turbos provide greater power while providing better economy. And the M line-up will continue to be high-reving.

You'll also notice that Audi will be moving away from their V8 setup in the S4/S5 line-ups. They've already made the transition with the S4 to a supercharged V6.

It's not only become a numbers game against their competitors, but they are also having to compete with tighter and tighter emissions/economy standards in both the United States and Europe.

The ///M X6 laps the Ring faster than the e46 ///M3.

I knew the new M5 was using turbos but wasn't sure why. I thought BMW was taking the "easy way" into more power.

Rumors state even the Ferrari Enzo replacement might have turbos.

When you look back at Ferrari's flagship supercars of the time, the F40 was actually supercharged if I am not mistaken. There was a time when F1 engines were forced induction as well, and rumor has it they will be again in the near future.

It's not the easy way out, since when you examine the engineering behind the engine, it's still truly amazing, and BMW is still able to get more power using less displacement than most competitors. They have kept it an art form. And if you take the X5/X6 for a spin, you'll think they are defying gravity with some of the turns you can do at high speeds. The suspension setup is unbelievably advanced.

But those new emissions/economy standards have them by the balls. I think Ferrari can get away with it because they produce a small amount of cars that allows them to stay out of the so-called "mass production commercial vehicles."

Okay, someone explain me one thing. The Porsche Cayenne Turbo has very good off-road abilities so it makes sense if you want a good off-road car that is also fast on the streets. However, the BMW X5 M has basically zero off-road abilities and costs almost the same as an M5. Why would someone pick the X5 M over the M5? What is the point of the X5 M?

My mother drives an E70 and my father an E60. The X5 has more space, has AWD which comes in handy for the snow during the winter, and rides higher up (personal preference). The 5-Series is a little easier to manage on the road based on size, but doesn't have the same amount of cargo room for lugging around larger items.
