Maybe this will convince you guys to go with the Z4
I think the best of both worlds would be to bend the Z4 shifter just SLIGHTLY, but then again I guess you risk breaking it, as I have never seen an actual write up where someone has done it.

That is sex right there.

My concern is the trim being hit by some people's posts. I have a 00 323Coupe.
It'll cost me about $80 in total either way I go.

That's it. Sabine's getting one by christmas. I already have the ZHP knob so this shouldn't run me more than $70 all in if I get the parts from the dealership.

Thanks man!

You know, this was a concern of mine too, but I didn't have that problem... I'm not sure if something changed at a certain year or not, but mine comes about 1" from hitting the trim in 3rd and 5th

Would you happen to have a pair of calipers to measure a few things for me on that shifter? I'm a machinist and have a machine shop at my disposal and I want to make a shifter out of stainless just like the z4 shifter. I just want the dimension from the end of the ball to where the weld begins at the bottom.

lol..i did not look @ ur shifter installed b4 postin the last one...looks gr8...now im kinda thinkin of if i should've gone with this instead of the 545i shifter!

how does it feel btw?

545 is very precise in shifting..a bit stiffer which is good but more stiffer on the 3rd!

Best idea... thank you!

I did just as instructed with all BMW parts I ordered online, all for around $100 US, and then some on my 2000 323i with 175k miles: I also replaced all the rubber bushings near the transmission and the piece right below the passenger compartment.

WHAT A DIFFERENCE!!!!

The best 'shift-feel' I have ever experienced prior to this was on my 2000 Honda Civic Si when it was brand new.. this is even tighter, smoother, shorter, and not hard to find the gears at all.

GREAT DIY!

Don't see why not...

Try going to www.oemparts.com and look up a 540i 6-speed shifter for the same year as your e46 3-series. If you really think about it, the kit should work on 5-speed or 6-speed, as the only real "change" you are making is to the shifter shaft itself. It is a little bit shorter and the ball is located in a different place on the shaft.

But, double check the part cross-references between the 5 & 6 speed shifter shaft part numbers... I'm willing to bet they are the same.
