Okay, time for some gun porn.. Here is the build of the upper receiver.
(The lower receiver is at the engraver's, and I'll have it back in 1-3 weeks )

BattleComp 1.0. If you've never tried them, they're really outstanding for rapid fire.

Okay, this is just full of WIN. No sooner do I wake up, and I see that I have an email from UPS stating that my lower receiver is scheduled to be delivered today. So, the rifle is complete!!

Here's the final build photos:

And here's the happy family together:

Took the M4CQBR to the range today. 250rds in about an hour with flawless functioning.
This is my new favorite rifle!

Now that both are complete, what do you see as the pros/cons of the 7.5" vs the 11.5"?

I'm considering an SBR for that billet lower that I picked up, and I'm debating the two (actually 7.5 vs 10.5 vs 11.5).

The 7.5" is pretty fun to shoot, but the rifle actually wound up being longer than I wanted. I was originally thinking of going to a different shorter 7" rail and a Troy Claymore muzzle brake, which would effectively shorten the rifle about 2-2.5 inches. However, I decided to just leave that rifle alone and I'm going to build my .300AAC Black out with the Noveske 8" barrel, and make that thing really short.

I think that the 7.5" is not really ideal for most people to have. I built it because I wanted something really short, but it's been a great platform for really learning about the AR as a whole and how gas systems and barrels function. The reason why the 7.5" is longer than I wanted is because of the Noveske KX3 brake, which adds 3" onto the end of the muzzle. It's a necessary part, as the 7.5" lets out a lot of muzzle flash. There is a lot of unspent powder igniting at the muzzle, and it looks like a flamethrower when shooting. This creates a LOT of concussion, but the KX3 pushed it all forward and away from the shooter. The other issue is that the gas system is a pistol-length system. I have been contemplating going to a VLTOR A5 kit with the 6oz buffer to keep working to slow that bolt down. There are still very high bolt speeds, and the extractor is ripping the shit out of the case heads.

The 11.5" is much more pleasant to shoot, and the recoil pulse is slower and less abrupt. This is of course to be expected, since recoil pulse tends to even out and slow down as you increase your gas system length. My SPR has a rifle gas system and that thing have a very smooth and light recoil. A carbine length gas system is just more ideal than the pistol length system. The 11.5" isn't really all that far off in feel from the 14.5" M4 that I carry in my car at work. I still have the capability for range, but it's well-suited for CQB work.

I would push you towards a 10.5"-11.5" just for the sake of comfort and convenience. You're going to get a more reliable setup with better ballistics and a more comfortable operation. If you want a shorter system, I would recommend actually skipping the 10.5" and going to the Daniel Defense 10.3" Mk18 CHF barrel. I really wouldn't recommend going any shorter than that. I've talked to other guys who have multiple SBRs, and the consensus is that the 10.3" Mk18 is the shortest barrel you can go with while still maintaining optimal reliability. That is supposedly why SOCOM and NAVSPECWARGRU settled on 10.3" exactly.

Up next:
.300AAC Blackout build with a Noveske 8" barrel, Seekins Gen2 lower, VLTOR VIS Carbine-length polylithic upper, and mess of other goodies.

Went to the range today and blasted through 500rds with my 11.5" CQBR. The rifle ran flawlessly with no sign of a hiccup. Total round count is now at 750rds, which I was hoping would have been higher by now. Still, I'm very impressed with the quality I've seen. I confirmed my zero at 50yds, which I didn't do when sighting in. My 25yd optic zero targets work very well for getting that 50yd actual zero.
I got kitted up for this session, as I need to get ready for a training course later this month (which is why my mags are all marked with white duct tape).

Here are some shots later in the day shooting my SPR. I used 70rds of hand loads. Lake City reloaded brass, swaged primer pocket, CCI No.400 primers, 24.0gr Alliant Reloader15, Sierra MatchKing 77gr BTHP Cannellure, military crimped bullets/case neck. You can see the results below.

Lastly, here is a 7 shot group from 100yds. I had one flier, so I re-engaged with two more rounds to see if it was an anomaly. Luckily, it was just shooter error.
.807 MOA 7-shot group including the flier
.460 MOA 6-shot group EXCLUDING the flier.

Currently, my agency prohibits carrying personal weapons on duty. However, I have been lobbying for personal rifles to be allowed. SWAT guys can carry their SWAT rifles, so I don't see why we can't. I talked to the head of the firearms division, and it looks like I have a backer for my quest to get this approved. Eventually.

In the event of that eventuality, I have been planning a rifle setup that I think is ideal. I have been pushing for a DMR setup due to the need for longer-range shots during certain circumstances (industrial areas, warehouses, parks, the high school, etc). The rifle will be a DMR setup that is CQB capable.
Here is what I have come up with so far:

UPPER
VLTOR MUR 1-A upper receiver
Daniel Defense M4A1 RIS-II rail
Noveske Lightweight 16” SS barrel
BattleComp 2.0
BCM Gunfighter Mod4 charging handle
US Optics SN-4 DFP 1x/4x
LaRue Tactical LT104 SPR mount
LaRue/Harris BR-S and LT706 QD Combo

LOWER
Noveske Gen2 Lower Receiver
CMT/Stag Lower Parts Kit
Geissele Super Dynamic Combat Trigger SD-C
Magpul BAD lever
B.A.D.-A.S.S. ambi safety
Magpul MIAD grip
LaRue Tactical RISR/Magpul CTR stock combo

New AR parts for my PSD PDW build are on the way. Troy Ind. is having a 15% off sale right now. Just saved $34 and got free shipping. Bam- that just happened.

A couple of update pics for my PSD PDW build. Got the parts from Troy Industries in. Just waiting on my package from LaRue Tactical and Rainier Arms, and the rifle will be complete. It's amazing how much lighter and smaller it is.

Here it is next to my 11.5" SBR. BIG difference!

The M7 is DONE. This thing is so much lighter and smaller, it's unbelievable.

Also decided to try out the Rainier Arms XTC Xtreme Tactical Compensator. Should be promising.
