Talking Found an abandoned runway, Jacksonville.

While driving around what used to be an old navy base, i found 2 inactive runways, and some roads in between that kind of circle around. Its legit.

Heres a pic of one of the 2 runways, the one long runway is a little over a mile and the other one is about 3/4 mile.

Use caution when driving on what appears to be an inactive runway. Naval aircraft use many remote fields for touch and go's (landing practice without actually stopping). What is the location of this runway? I can try and determine if we ever use it. Look for fresh, aircraft size, skid marks at each end.

Its an abandoned Navy base that was used back in world war 2, they used to dock destroyers here and the airfield was an auxiliary airfield during and after the war for a few years. It is now an industrial park where some businesses have used some of the old buildings there. There is an active runway that is fenced off with barb wire, its only the southern runway thats active and appears to not be part of the rest of the property, but the rest looks abandoned the road leading to it is not gated off, i did a google search and found the number to the people that own it and was going to call them up with an idea of maybe turning this into a possible race track or using it for autocross events maybe...i would just have to get them to agree with my idea and to agree with a liability contract that says they will not be liable for any damages to us or our cars...so do you think thats a good idea? I will take anyone back there who is interested.

heres a satellite map of the area. Green areas are where you can drive, Red is Restricted off limits or private property.

heres a map of the airfield if you want to look around and zoom in. southern runway is the only active one. and all those little cars that are shown arent there, google images put them there for some reason...

They were on a runway to find out the top speed of there car. and they end up getting airborne and hitting a tree off the side of the runway. And killing everyone in the car. It was like 4 or 5 guys and I think they were all under 25.
But basically the car was destroyed it didn't even look like a car anymore. I'm going to search for the link now

someone told me yesterday that apparently it was used for autox a few years back, then some guy who tuned dodge vipers used the strip to test his tunes and mods. now it just sits there unused.

is he still there? does he still use it? that might explain the smooth pavement that seems fairly new on one of the the runways. and theres two new looking concrete rings that are fun to go on at high speeds. theres a pic on this page that looks like the runway i was on. http://www.roeracing.com/about/index.asp scroll down a little its on the right. it looks just like the pic i took. just hope we can turn this into an autox spot.

So when you were out there, there wasn't any security or anything? Nobody running you off?

Seems so weird that this would just be sitting out there for all these years and others wouldn't have found it. Sure there aren't "No Trespassing" signs?
