My Ride: E46 M3
Hi Guys

hey guys i've been lurking for a while and just thought i'd introduce myself.

not a BMW owner at this stage, but i have been having serious thoughts about picking up an E46 M3 for a little while now. I currently own an Evo 9 which i've fiddled with a bit, and it's a fantastic car but i've always had a thing for the M3 and now they are finally in my price range. Not set just yet, but close enough to join up here

things that concern me are the subframe issues (and by concern i mean terrify) and the possibility of a vanos fault lunching the engine. SMG pumps also (probably buy an SMG so the wife can have a go).

i know the subframe is pretty much a guarantee and that it would be wise to factor in the cost of a re-enforcement (i'm in adelaide, is there any workshops that know what they are doing with this down here?).

How common are the vanos and SMG pump problems?

any other things i should be looking for?

anyway, thought i'd start a thread to say gday before i start appearing in threads asking dumb questions

Hi Guys

Welcome!! I'm also from Adelaide! So far I have found BM Wise to be good to me and my M3. Let us know if you want to go for a blast some time. I have a manual though. So no experience with the smg as yet.

I'm in Adelaide too. Can highly recommend Anthony or Dean from BM Wise. They do great stuff. Have a talk to them, I'm sure they'll tell you of all the sub-frame issues they've seen.

Just bringing this back up because i finally sold the evo (was pretty hard to let it go i wont lie) and got myself into this:

late 02 build, 91xxxkm. Very nice in and out. Not as rapid as the mitsubishi but quick enough and makes up for it in a lot of other important ways

quick question though, it's missing the little "G" on the "SMG" logo on the gearstick surround. Where the hell can i get a new one lol? not having much luck via google / ebay / etc.

Do it mate. I use to own an CT9A Evo myself.
You'll love the M3.
