Blah. That's all I have to say about this underwhelming M54 motor. BLAH!

This ATI damper looks nice, but $575 seems... steep? I agree now that its apparently needed, and I'm sure that's what they want to get for a low volume production balancer, of course. I called my engine builder, who buys a lot of ATI dampers for all sorts of engines. He says they "usually cost from $280-400 for most motors". He said that price is more than what a NASCAR engine's balancer costs... crazy high. But its such a low production volume (they've made what? 2 of them, ever?) that this is probably why. That and the BMW Tax.

He's checking on this part number and will get back to me - if he can't get it for under $575 I'll get on the GB here (if I keep racing this car into next year).

Thanks for getting this GB going, guys. $75 off of the insane $650 price is better than nothing.
Nice track build writeup on BF.com

Yep, the price can probably be attributed to the low production numbers. Has anyone seen the price on a new BMW damper? Not cheap either.

This is the list I have. If you don't want your name on it, speak now. Seems like we might have a go. ATI said we could do it with 9. James, they can't take the deposit and hold it. However, pulling your damper shouldn't be that hard for you to do overseas. If you can't do it, I'm sure we understand, though I PMd everyone on the list. Let's update it and see if we can get this rolling.

I hate to do this guys but I think I am going to have to pull out. Priorities have changed and being in Australia means I would need to buy a complete set of install tools and is just going to be more stress and work then I am going to benefit from the damper.

I have to take my name off the list. Since this requires measuring the crank shaft snout, I don't think this can sit on the shelf. Even at the track, I don't often go above 6k RPM. I think I am going to safety wire the oil pump nut and call it the day.

When I go in for an engine rebuild, I'll upgrade to a better damper.

Right now, there are other, more pressing needs/upgrades I'd rather do. If there is a more significant savings than $75, I'd reconsider.

Well, that went out the window quickly. Our rep gets back the 24th. If we can't fill up the list by then I think we're just going to have to call this thing off and buy it individually. Please see who you can get in on this. Saving $75 is better than saving nothing. We can do this with 9, but that means that everyone left has to commit and we'll need one more.

aggieE46 In case nobody said it yet, thank you for trying.

Come to find out, ATI is about 10 minutes from my house. How strange is that!

Very cool! You can save on shipping.

We can still possibly save this. Rep will be back the 24th. Let's see if we can work hard and get 9 by then.

Thank you very much for setting this up! However, have the other four in the list confirmed?

I THINK trippin is in for sure. I'm going to see Fair in a few days. I'll ask him for sure then.

Take me off the list. I went ahead and ordered one already. Sorry it didn't look like the GB was going to happen.

Wow, Jackcat559 PMd me and said ATI charged him $750. This GB is a better deal than I thought.

see what being impatient gets you... more money spent, but I'm trying to get my engine totally done with the rebuild by Oct 30th.

btw anyone who wants to rent my tool package for this:
The cost is $50 plus shipping.
I brought the box to the shipper and it's like $35 to Virginia and $55 to California for reference.
$600 deposit until it comes back in good condition.
Brady and Julio get first dibs if they want.

Notes:
The tool package doesn't include the mammoth torque wrench you will need for the crank bolt but I rented one for $126 (total including shipping both ways).
The tool package manifest and the torque wrench rental source have been posted previously in this thread.
The DIY link for this job has been posted previously in this thread.

If you can at least measure your snout and then install when you get back, maybe you, Terry, and I can install together on a weekend (and split the deposit).
