Boring a 3.0L engine
How big would i be able to bore my 3 liter engine?
I dont want to sell my car and get an M3 im just wondering for the car i have. Thanks |

I'm no expert, but from what I've read, it'd be pretty difficult to pull off. The cylinder walls are apparently already quite thin with pretty much no room to bore out and re-sleeve. With that said, I don't think it's impossible, since Hamann at one point was boring out m54s to about 3.2 or 3.3L

Boring an M54 engine is a waste of time and money if you want power. Getting a supercharger or turbo kit is the only way to go if you want to try and compare your engine power to an M3.

I went to 84.5MM easily. There's more left in the sleeve, but supercharging is more cost effective

There's enough material on the steel liner, but I wouldn't do it. Add the costs of pistons, machine shop, labor and tuning and you could be at the cost nice supercharger kit, but probably less power than a supercharger.

Alpina were able to go up to 3.3L with their E46 B3's.

Okay...so I'm bumping this because I'll be getting a spare M52TUB28 for free (Overheated). It will be taken apart and built for tracking. Looking to keep the displacement squared and use the S52 Crank (85.8mm). So I'm wondering if I can squeeze .9mm out of the cylinder wall/sleeve combo to get a total displacement of 2.976 Liters. In doing so, hopefully avoiding the Harmonic issues caused by the longer stroke of the M54B30. With the larger displacement I can theoretically run a Modified 330 MS43 DME. How low would this bring the Compression Ratio down to? And would it take to a turbocharger better than a super charger? Just trying to think outside the typical modifications on paper. Thanks guys.

Got ahead of myself...no track car yet. This will be transplanted into an e30.
But...everything I've read about the tracked B30s have resulted in some sort of OPN failure and harmonic damper issues. I haven't read any with the B25 and B28, which have undersquare and square displacements. I'd like to see if this would develop these issues with a square displacement modified B30. I'm going to have new pistons and conrods anyway...it's not going to affect the price that much I don't think. Aside from the cost to Bore out the cylinder/sleeve combo .9mm to increase the total bore to 85.8mm, everything else was going to be bought no matter what. This is also a long term job so money isn't as much an object with this as it's more a whenever I have some spare cash kind of deal. Just doing the research. So can you squeeze out .9 mm from the cylinder wall/sleeve combo in the M52TU/M54 block, and how would this affect the Compression Ratio?

Shouldn't really affect the compression ratio, mostly because you'll be having pistons made to whatever CP you want.

I remember seeing a german site a few months back that was selling stroker kits for b30's. They claimed 3.3l with a 40whp gain for like $8k. I wish I could remember the site, never checked again cause 8k wasn't reasonable.
Edit: found it, 3.3l making 286hp and 342Nm, at the low low cost of $11,800. But its for a brand new motor built in Germany. Last edited by sedanpowersc; 12-24-2011 at 04:51 PM. |
