Given the budget, there's not many options, basically either a cheap intake, or a muffler delete.

CD with engine sounds and crank up the volume - otherwise, you're shit out of luck.

muffler delete will run you around 150-250 depending on the shop and then add on some nice tips (maybe another 50 on ebay)... will look great and sound even better

Oil change.

Muffler delete sounds like garbage, IMHO.

If you feel like driving up to Raleigh, Henry's muffler shop has done a few e46's I know of, it sounds good and he charges about $80, more if you want some fancy looking tips, but he throws some decent tips on.

1.buy a hacksaw (~$10),
2.cut off muffler (~ $0 maybe buy yourself a drink in case you get tired so ~$3)
3 paypal me the leftover $$ for my technical advice (~$87)

You seem to have forgotten the part where you are supposed to weld some more piping in place of the old exhaust and then weld new tips on

So, what do guys with SRT-4s do? They come stock with a muffler-less exhaust.

Find a different shop to get an inspection done, ask around, I know there's quite a few bmw's down there with muffler deletes.

If your car comes with muffler than you have to have it, if your car comes with resonators than you have to have them. It's really stupid.
