328i Engine knocking sound

Hey guys i got a 00 328i with 120k, Recently i started hearing a knocking sound coming from what sounds like under my valve cover or just to the left of it when looking at the engine in front of the car. It seems like it only happens when the engine is warmed up. I recently did the valve cover gasket along with the vanos seals and spark plugs, the whole coolants system except for the radiator, the power steering pump, fuel filter, belts and pulleys and intake and exhaust side camshaft position sensors. I am not getting any codes, but the car is running rough and the power feels choppy.

please guys help, i'm 19 i do all this work myself and i'm trying so hard to keep from taking this shop!!!!!!!

nope thats just what mine does... not really sure where mine comes from but i'll figure it out one of these days.

I would think something is loose or valve tap (i dont think we get that though)

I have the same engine and I have a slight knocking as well. Most likely the lifter heads, and I wouldnt worry to much about it.

If your power is choppy, have you cleaned your throttle body yet? Mine performed alot better after I cleaned the throttle body, which takes about 1 hour and $5 in carb cleaner and towels.

Is it a loud knocking or ticking noise and was it intermittent? It happened to me a week ago and came to find out it was my AC compressor. I thought and even in the first video it was coming from valve cover but it's actually below when the AC engages.

Here's my post and how I actually found the issue:

I hope this helps and good luck buddy. It doesn't explain the choppiness though in your case.

i will look into both things, thanks. I first noticed the choppiness when i had my car in cruise control, i swapped out my diff for the 3.46 and just to be easy on the motor i go 60 on the highway and it felt like i was tapping the break or something! it happens when the car has been running for a while, they are probably unrelated problem i guess i was just hoping for one fix for a couple of problems.

Most likely one of your spark plugs. Just pop off the coils and make sure that the spark plugs are tightened correctly. AND REMEMBER, TORQUE TO SPEC.

I get a random knocking at idle that sounds like something bouncing around inside the intake manifold.
