suspension upgrade decisions..... help!

Hi All,

Haven't posted here in a while, but now need some help. I am about to upgrade my suspension on my 330ci. Car current has o.e. sports suspension set up with 80k miles. I will most likely not be tracking that much, but want to lower my car about an inch for wheels + improved handling. I have searched this forum over and over... still can't seem to come up with a decision.

Here are what I have so far, can you guys provide your insights preferably from personal experience? I was originally dead set on KW V1s, but now don't think I need coilovers for my needs.

Poll Away!

1 - Eibach Pro Kit + Koni FSD
2 - H&R Sports Cup Kit
3 - KW V1 or V2s
4 - Any Other Suggestions and Reasons

1 - Handling
2 - Ride Quality
3 - Price - hoping to spend around/under $1000 max.
4 - Drop - about 1 inch is all I need.
5 - Adjustability

I can't speak much for the other kits but I myself just dropped on the H&R Sport Cup Kit and I have no complaints. My car had sports suspension, so I decided on the H&R Sport Cup Kit because since I was spending hundreds on a drop, then it may as well have been a nice aggressive drop. Coilovers, for me, would have been overkill and the Eibach springs don't give you that aggressive raked look that I like.

are you oe shocks still good? i would say just get springs for now and see how that fairs out for you. if you think that's all you need then later get shocks when those go out. if you need something more, then get what you need and sell the springs.

OP just be sensible - good luck!

Getting #1, #2, and #3 all together is going to be tough.... my suggestion to you would be a lightly used set of TC Kline Single adjustables... If you can find used AST 4100's for that price with camber plates, then do that.

Most sub $1000 coilovers are probably going to give you only ride quality OR increased handling but not both

thanks all for the responses. for what i really need (better handling + decent ride quality, not planned to be on the track any time soon)... do i really need coilovers? i know there are coilovers out there for good price, but shouldn't i just get springs + shocks from a more reputable vendor?

springs + shocks sometimes > coils lol so just go coils. i think st v1 or kw v1 should be enough for what you want. or you can get some springs, and get sways. sways do way more for handling than just lowering it

^ yea kw v1s were what i was looking into originally, then i started looking into a bit cheaper options, like #1 and #2 in my poll. are these kw v1 coilovers THAT much better than those options i have listed (not v2, v3s of course)?

Koni Yellows are not adjustable height-wise. Only the rebound is adjustable.
I currently have Yellows that has bottomed out. Fluids has been spilling out of it causing rust to developed around the strut. I had it for 2 years and 25,000 to be exact. It has failed me.

I went ahead and purchased HR Touring Cup Kit ($599) since it is the only kit not backordered at tirerack. FSDs and eibach is suppose to be good as well. But backordered and cost $800+. I don't track, just drive from point A to B.

Welcome to option hell. I'm in the same boat.

I have a similar poll, check it out if you want. I ruled out the poll winner, as the variable damping FSD's MAY exhibit unpredictable stiffening during transition (even a chance of this is 100% unacceptable to me), but sticking with the Koni brand for the Yellows.

Springs and shocks are only slightly cheaper than coilovers (only height adjustable). So when pricing springs and shock combos, it's easy to try to talk yourself into KW V1's (or the cheaper ST V1's). What brought me back to springs and shocks is that my car is a street car. I have had friends blow individual coilovers hitting sudden street dips at speeds less than 55MPH. I went with Yellows and an undecided spring choice.

Good luck in your decision, please be sure to post a review when you get it installed.
