Lots of white smoke from exhaust, but no coolant in the oil.

my 01 z3 M54 is blowing a lot of white smoke- Initially i thought it'd be a head gasket, however at the starting to tare the engine apart we found a puddle of oil at the bottom of the intake tube and on the throttle body. The oil is clean on the throttle body, and when checked via the dipstick. The coolant is clean as well. Anyone have any ideas? CCV?

Tomorrow I'm going to run a compression check to see whats going on with the car.

Can anyone also post a picture of where the CCV is?

The CCV (crankcase ventilation) is your "PVC" system and has been reported to fail where vacuum can draw oil into the intake and burn it creating exhaust smoke. It is quite a bit of plumbing and lives under the intake manifold. It can only be inspected with dis-assembly. The plastic pipes can be brittle where you should have a replacement kit handy.

Burning oil has a unique smell and usually a blueish color. White is water from condensation or a dreaded coolant leak normally the head gasket.

Good luck, hope it's something minor.

You could always send off a sample of oil to Blackstone labs to look for coolant to exclude it once and for all. I often had a blueish tinge to my esxhaust fumes on a cold start. Compression check came back fine as did oil analysis. Could it possibly be the begiinning of a head gasket failure ie the coolant is being boiled off cause there isnt too much of a leak? You only need a small amount of coolant to get a some whiteish smoke. But certainly if you're having lots of white smoke best to have it checked.

yepper. blue = oil. white = water/coolant.
appears the head is cracked or bad gasket. it's not getting into the oil pan because the leakage is being burned in the combustion chamber - hence the white smoke.

The white isn't really smoke, as much as it is steam. Water (coolant) doesn't smoke.

Do something, waft the exhaust. Don't directly inhale, and if you do and die I am not responsible. If it smells sweet you're screwed. This equals coolant in combustion chamber.

Try a leakdown test, or compression test all 6 cyl. Either will tell you something isn't right.

I'm tired of repeating myself. Every week I have to say this: it is your CCV that has failed. Remove the CCV vacuum port runners on top of your intake manifold. If you have oil dripping out of the 6 ports, your CCV failed. Oil can only get into your intake manifold though the CCV vacuum rail on top of the intake manifold. Looking forward to next week's repeat.
