Question Clutch needs replacing, opinions & insight please

So my '03 330i ZHP's clutch is slipping fairly often & I'm about to have it replaced. We've got a family mechanic that's certified to do the work, but he doesn't really do much in the aftermarket department. I'm wanting something a little better than stock but nothing too off the wall. And not knowing a damn thing about what all I need, can the more educated members help me out here.

EDIT: Ive searched and read something about the use of an M5 clutch & a lightweight flywheel. Can I please get an educated & useful explanation of this setup?

You are probably best to just stick with stock. If you go online, then you can find a clutch kit for around $300-$350. Stock is made by LUK and Sachs does make one too.

I've heard good things about the M5 clutch / Stg2 flywheel from UUC. You don't really need a stronger clutch, but the lightweight flywheel should be nice.

I have the UUC Stage 2 Lightweight Flywheel w/ OE M5 clutch and pressure plate. I love it. The car is much livelier with the setup - revs quicker, more positive feel from the clutch pedal.

You get a small increase in clutch pedal stiffness, and an increase in clutch friction and holding power. The setup left me with better driveability. It is easier to modulate. The increased holding power lets you get on the gas quicker and have the clutch grab and take it, instead of slipping so much before grabbing. The car should have come this way from the factory.

I like the solid flywheel (as opposed to OE dual-mass). The upgrade removed the driveline shudder I used to get from the worn flywheel dual-mass spring mechanism. The sprung-hub clutch also does what they say - eliminates gear rattle. I got no noticeable increase in gear rattle after the upgrade. My exhaust is without muffler and one resonator, so perhaps it drowns out any additional noise. But really no difference. I run the thicker Redline MTL.

Overall, an excellent kit and very worth it.

If you're running with anything near stockish power I'd stick with the stock clutch. Also - the stock flywheel is spec'd from the factory for the durability to handle one clutch replacement. But if it's really slipping and heating things up it might be the end of the flywheel surface (because it's dual mass it's too wobbly to be resurfaced).

In a couple months I'll be installing a UUC Performance Organic Clutch/Stock Dual Mass Flywheel combo. I'm hoping for complete silence, stock feel & turbo friendliness.

I have a 323Ci. I recommend not sticking with the stock clutch. The dual-mass flywheel spring mechanism wore out for me on the first clutch, causing major driveline shudder when accelerating from a stop and from first to second. This was most likely exacerbated by worn motor mounts, but the cause was the OE flywheel.

If you're dropping the tranny for a clutch swap, do the flywheel upgrade at the same time. There is no added noise (at least for me), the feel is superior to stock, and it is the most turbo-friendly. I thought the Stage 2 would be a big, noticeable change and make the car hard to manage. It just made it better - in every way. And I even have the least powerful E46. Drivability is superb.

Note: DO replace everything you can while you are in there: pilot bearing, output shaft seal, shift shaft seal, transmission shaft seal (and the included throwout bearing, of course). It seems people have been getting noise from a worn/damaged pilot bearing that they think is gear rattle.
