help needed with installing a Sony radio onto a BMW

Hi people,
I need help!!!! I purchased a Sony MP3 headunit from Crutchfield earlier this week and I just installed it onto my sister's 1991 325i convertible. I didn't use the Pac OEM2 they told me to purchase. I just cut the factory wires and connect them onto the sony harness. everything works execpt there is no sound when I play regular CD or MP3 cd. I mean, radio works, has sounds, all the memory retains after I turn off the ignition (took me 3 trys to figure out which one is ACC lead and which one is permanent lead). Front/Rear speaker works; fader/balance works correclty.

So the only problem is that CD doens't make sound when play. It recognizes the number of tracks on the CD (regular cd), and it recognizes the structures on a MP3 player. Anyone know what might be the problem with cd playback? is it simply a bad unit?

Crutchfield gave me an adaptor that goes between the Sony harness and factory front speaker leads, but they didn't give me one for the rear, so I cut the rear lead from BMW and hook it onto the postive of the rear of sony harness, which means the rear right negative and rear left negative is connecting to nothing at this moment, but it sounds fine with radio (both AM and FM).

Sorry about this long post. I hope my question is not too confusing. I'll clarify it if needed. thanks.

Don

thanks!!! I played around with the wiring.. i orginally connected the "pwant" from the bmw to the power antenna of the sony (blue), and that way only radio makes sound, no CD or mp3. Then I cut that connection and wire the "pwant" from BMW to the blue/white from sony (amp power or something like that) and now it works. didn't know the logic behind it, unless "pwant" means "powering up the factory amp" and not "power antenna". oh well.. it works now =)

and i also tried to gound the negative terminals of the speakes, and if I ground them, no sound will come out. so i discard the negative speaker output from sony and only connect the positive..

There is also an illumination wire for the lights to light up. or a dimmer wire.
