You are right about the 4 cylinder of the first M3, but when we talk about history and tradition, the 6 cylinders N/A engine was used in two generations, and there only is 4 generations of M3: E30, E36, E46, E9x. This engine started in the E36 with a 3.0L and 286hp, and during 14 years evoluted to 3.2L and 360hp in the E46 CSL.
